Pack the least used items first. When you start packing up your old place, start by packing all the items you rarely use. Start with everything in the attic and in the garage that is not already in storage bins or boxes. (Even if they are, make sure you notice it!) Next, Move on to objects in your house that are not parts of your daily life, such as books, movies, and artwork.
Clear out an area to store your packed boxes before moving. If you have a garage, it's an obvious place. The boxes that were last in the truck were first stored in rooms in your new location and left under and behind the stacks at the new location, while the more important packages are stacked in front of and over them. Have donated and discarded boxes ready when you pack. Even if you have done a good job of cleaning away before you start packing, you may be able to clean even more because you are actually putting things in inboxes. Once it's in the new location, you'll probably just place it somewhere, but if you make quick decisions when packing, you may be able to clear your belongings even more than you have.
Pay special track to screws and parts for furniture that you need to disassemble. If you need to disassemble furniture, insert the screws in the Ziplocs and mark them well. Along with the previous point, think through your sleeping arrangements for the first night or two at your new place. Will the beds be set up? Are you just going to sleep on mattresses? Air mattresses? Get the bedding or sleeping bags and pillows you need and store them in an easily accessible place and make sure they don't get lost in the moving shuffle. Pack bedding where you can easily grab it to make the beds for your first night in the new place.
