Examples of Recent Opportunities • Week with students from across country to create mobile Apps • Beginning of apprenticeship with Civil Engineer • Job Shadows: Cooking (The Spot, Pasta Per Caso) • International Student Business Competition • Work Scholarships: Tutors, Handyman, Campus Support • Student Government • Movie-making Club

  11. Students plan for overcoming obstacles • With support from parents, teachers, counselor, administrators, mentors.

  13. Parents, if you have not already had your Personal Education Plan (PEP) Meeting with Mrs. Curry or Dr. Lewis, please schedule it with Mrs. Curry before you leave campus today.

  14. New Course: Applied Learning • Instructors: Heidi Curry, Joni Miller, Elizabeth Usher • Explore & Learn by DOING real-world work. • Individualized support for finding & reaching PEP goals. • Each Form has one full afternoon each week - internship, job shadow, class projects.

  15. Learning in the “Real World” • Job Shadows: Students explore career interests by visiting businesses and professionals at the work place • Apprenticeships: Students create meaningful projects, guided by mentors in the workplace (ex. Website, menu, building design plans)

  19. For Every Course • Overall Course Grade: A+, A, A- , B+, B, B- , C+, C, C- , D+, D, D-, F • Mastery of Specific Content (Information) and Skills (What can he/she DO with that information?): • 1 = D = Below Mastery • 2 = C = Approaching Mastery • 3 = B = Mastery • 4 = A = Exceeds Mastery

Benefits • Students, Parents, and Teachers know exactly where students are strong and weak. • Pushes ALL students to reach higher. • We “catch” problem areas that could otherwise get “lost” in average grade. • Keeps teachers, students, and parents focused on reaching true goals of content (information) and skills (what to do with information).

  22. Support for this New Approach • School systems all over the world are moving to mastery approach. • Belize Ministry of Education Chief Education Officer Chris Aird stated, “this is the competency based model – which we are trying to promote.” • Similar to how CXC and ATLIB grade papers.

Overall Grade • Four-point Scale and Letter Grade: Used in high schools, tertiary schools, and organizations across Belize, e.g. St. John’s, Sacred Heart, U.B., Development Finance Corporation. • 4 = A • 3 = B • 2 = C • 1 = D • Example: 3.1, B- • Used in high schools and tertiary schools across Belize.

  24. Engrade • Online grading system used by more than 4 million students and parents • You can check your child’s grades and progress by logging into engrade. • Find grades and (some) assignments. • Note: Averages are not complete until report card is printed.
