  3. Archimedes Hawaii • 1992: Founded at Stanford University • “[to] ensure that all people have full access to information in whatever form it is encountered” • 2003: Relocated to University of Hawaii • Support offered from UH when last NSF grant ended • Focus of Archimedes Project: “Universal Design” • Any person with any disability being able to use any IT device (AT)

  4. Assistive Technology • What is AT? • Developing and using technology to make things that were previously inaccessible to a person accessible. • What is the purpose of AT? • To help anyone who because of culture, education, age, disability, etc. may not be able to do things that other people may do.

  5. ZigBee Protocol Overview User Interface Module Toy Switch Module “Design and develop a multi-channel, wireless communication system for the purpose of modifying toys for children with disabilities”

  6. Overview ZigBee Wireless Protocol User Interface Module Toy Switch Module

  7. General Discussion XBee™ ZigBee/802.15.4 Development Kit • XBee™/XBee-PRO™ OEM RF Modules • Low power consumption • Long Range Data Integrity • Advanced Networking and Security • Ease of use http://www.zigbee.org/en/index.asp

  8. General Discussion Picaxe Microcontroller • Single chip computers • Powerful, low cost, microcontroller programming system • Designed to simplify microcontroller use • No programmers or erasers • The 8, 18, 28, and 40-pin versions • Free software programming editor to run, compile, download and edit to picaxe chip Various Picaxe Microcontrollers Picaxe Starter Pack http://www.rev-ed.co.uk/picaxe/

  9. General Discussion Toys • Most toys are not universal • Modified toys are too expensive • Toy Switches • Toy Complexity

  10. General Discussion User Interfaces • To allow access to diverse end users • Takes into account the specific needs of a person • Examples

  11. Potential Problems • Not knowing what to do = Wasting time • Not understanding the XBee module • Conflicting schedules • Breaking things • No money • Networking protocols • Not finishing the project

  12. Expectations • Master the use of ZigBee • Programming • Wireless Protocols • Basic concepts of wireless technologies • Various uses of circuit elements: • relays, encoders, decoders, and microcontrollers

  13. Deliverable Goals • Wireless communication system • Capability of operating a toy with multiple functions • Easy-to-use • Clean and compact circuitry • Well documented -- User Manual
