  7. Introduction Soaring prices of cereals including rice, cooking oil, fuels, transportation, fertilizers, etc... in the world markets TICAD IV, Japan – Tunis in June 08 FAO Summit in June 08 Initiatives on food soaring prices (FAO, WB, IMF, EU, etc.)

  8. Objective: to mitigate the impact of soaring prices on the world markets particularly : (i) To increase food products supply ofdomestic markets by improving agricultural productivity and production; and (ii) To facilitate vulnerable population’s access to balanced alimentation

In the short term Objective: to increase food productivity and diversity • Off-season • Communication - sensitization • Platform for fertilizers • Main season • Set up of CSA (Centers for Agricultural Services) • Input supply (improved seeds, fertilizers, pesticides…) • Promoting urban and peri urban agriculture

In the medium term Objective: to increase food productivity and diversity • Strengthening of extension services • Implementing watershed and irrigation scheme program • Research and Development (R&D) • Input supply • Promoting rural credit • Diversification of food production (sorghum, cassava) • Empowerment of farmers’ associations • Post harvest management (reducing post harvest losses, transportation, drying,…) • Data base - Storage and handling facilities (silo,….) - Marketing (export to COMESA, COI, SADC countries)
