  3. Today’s Learning Target I can explain how and why we amend the Texas Constitution

  4. Why it Matters The purpose of the amendment process is to revise laws based on the current needs of the people • Example: • It is illegal for one to shoot a buffalo from the second story of a hotel. • It is illegal to milk another person’s cow.

  5. Warm up In your notebook create a list of many things that you would like to change at BBMS!

  6. AMENDMENT Amend-ment Define - Amendment Change how the president is elected Change the number of years a senator serves 2/3 of Congress passed me! Now I must be ratified by at least 38/50 states Change your name Change your address Change your mind

  7. Amending the Texas Constitution • The founding fathers of the TX. Consti. wanted the people to have some power over their gov’t • The founding fathers created the amendment system so that people could create new laws or replace out of date laws • This process helps make sure that our gov’t is current, relevant, and run by the people.

  8. The Amending Process • In order for an amendment to be made, the following must happen after an amendment is presented: • A 2/3 vote of the state House of Representatives • 2/3 vote in the state Senate • A majority vote of the people • If all these occur, then an amendment to the Texas Consti. is made.

  9. The Set Up • Part of the room is the Texas Senate(who casts the last vote in case of a tie?) • Part of the room is the Texas House of Representatives(who casts the last vote in case of a tie?) • Part of the room are the Texas citizens

  10. Activity • In your group propose 1 thing you would like to change here at BBMS • Provide 3 convincing reasons why your change should be made (each person tells one reason). • Present your proposed amendment to the class to see if it can become a law. • You have 15 minutes.

  11. The Presentation • Present your proposed amendment to the class to see if it can become a law • The Senate votes (must have 2/3 vote) • The House of Representatives votes (must have 2/3 vote) • The people vote (majority rule)
