  1. Preparing for TSDL Pinnacle SIS System

  2. Agenda • Philosophy of TSDL • Challenges Involved • Documentation Available • Preparation Steps • Generating Files

  3. Philosophy of TSDL • Report performance information for each class a student takes, linked to the teacher • Report the information in a consistent manner across all districts • Report the information as an “end of year” snapshot • CEPI will consolidate information and send back to districts for use in evaluations

  4. Challenges Involved • Entry of Subject Codes, Course Codes, Course Types, Virtual Courses and Mentor Status • Entry of PIC codes for all teachers • Gathering course and grade information for all grade levels (especially elementary) • How to identify completion status for all courses and how to store that information • How/whether to include withdrawn and exited classes • Summer School Students and SIS Roll-Over • Students in a class with mixed subjects (NovaNet, etc).

  5. Documentation Available • CEPI Website (www.mi.gov/cepi) • Component specifications • NCES Code Documents • Training Videos (Last year’s videos) • MiCase Website (www.mi-case.org), Support>Pinnacle State Reporting>MSDS State Reporting Files • Michigan State Reporting in Pinnacle SIS 2012-2013 • Revised MSDS Tool and Scripts • This PowerPoint and pending Video Recording

  6. Deadlines • Certified by August 1, 2013 • Reopens mid-August, 2013 • Final certification August 27, 2013 • Any course without a final grade by August 27th should be reported with a grade of “I” incomplete

  7. Preparation Steps • Enter PIC codes for all teachers in the View>Teachers Confidential tab. • Enter Multiple PIC Codes for a class by adding Secondary Teachers in Schedule tab

  8. Preparation Steps • In View>District Courses General tab • Enter NCES Subject Codes • NCES Course Codes (now required for elementary) • Course Types • Virtual Delivery (new) • Mentor Teacher (new) • Exclude from State Reporting

  9. Preparation Steps • Enter Virtual Course and Mentor Teacher fields in the View>Classes screen • Right click on the section row and choose Class Properties

  10. Preparation Steps • Completion Status determined by scripts when file is generated if not already set • CP – Completed passed is set by having Passing checkmark in Letter Grade config • CF – Completed failed is set by having Passing unchecked in Letter Grade config • State code field can be used to explicitly set completion • AU-Audited • I-Incomplete (automatic if grade missing for HS) • WE - Withdraw exited selected for classes dropped

  11. Preparation Steps • Where will course information be pulled from • Grade History • Allows for grade information to be reported • Completion status added here along with added fields for Virtual Class and Mentor Teacher • Will use Calendar Grade Periods to link Grading Terms/Reporting Levels to Scheduling Terms

  12. Preparation Steps

  13. Preparation Steps • Where will course information be pulled from • Student Schedule • May be needed for elementary • Grade not submitted • Can be used for withdrawn courses • Need to have one Reporting Level flagged for Transcript in Grade Configuration

  14. Generating Files • New and modified MSDS SQL scripts • Modified MSDS Tool to generate • Will consider all students who had classes this year • Primarily will look at Grade History • If no grade history (Elementary for instance), will look at schedule • Data pulled from schedule will determine completion status from retention (promoted=CompletedPassed, retained=CompletedFailed) • Planning not to Begin New School Year (BNSY) until TSDL submission completed

  15. Generating Files • Use date range • Start Date 7/1/2012 • End Date 8/27/2013 • Count Date 8/27/2013 (not used) • Edit with XML Pad 3 • www.wmhelp.com • Press F7 to Validate • Double click on error to locate

  16. Troubleshooting • Missing PIC Codes • Filter for StateId is null • Missing NCES Codes • NCESSubjectCode is null • NCESCourseCode is null (except subject code 00) • District Course Summary Report • Course Type • This can be done through ad-hoc Query tool • MiCase – District Courses • Should be defaulted to 01-Regular
