  3. The New Hire, cont’d • Non-exempt (Classified or hourly staff) • These folks (those making less than $47,476 per year or $913.00/ per week) would be paid overtime for any hours worked in excess of 40 hrs in a workweek. The new threshold effective date was 12/1/16. However, this has been placed on hold.

  4. TRUE OR FALSE? • Certified employees are eligible for overtime compensation if performance of both coaching and teaching exceeds 40 hours in the workweek.

  5. False • If teachers are also coaching for you there is no concern regarding overtime. • There is concern however if you have a person coaching for you that is not a teacher or is not a district employee. • You may want to consider having all coaches keep a timecard. Just a thought.

  6. TRUE OR FALSE? 2. If a person is hired as office manager and paid on a salary basis with main duties consisting of scheduling employees, bookkeeping and answering the phone, they do not need to be paid overtime.

  7. FALSE • This person would be classified as non-exempt. They don’t qualify under the “duties test”, administrative, professional, or executive. 9. Other: HSA’s (Health Savings Accounts – tax-advantaged medical savings account, must have HDHP-high deductible health plan), stay informed about the limits that an employee can contribute each calendar year. For 2017, $3,400 for single and $6,750 for family. If the employee is 55+, they can contribute an additional $1,000. The minimum deductible to participate in a HSA is $1,300 for single; and $2,600 for family in 2016. Consult your plan provider for more details. Also, if you have an HRA (Health Reimbursement Account - employer funded health benefit plan), you cannot participate in an HSA until your HRA is exhausted. Check with your providers ie, Allegiance, American Fidelity, etc. 403b’s are another area that you should be aware of annual limits. The most that can be contributed to a 403(b) account through employee elective deferrals by means of a salary reduction agreement is $18,000 for 2016. Again, employees 50+ years old can contribute an additional $5,500. Check out www.403bwise.com
