  4. Course Aims Students will develop and practice the skills to carry out a request for information, prepare for an interview on a policing operation and engage the media to support them gain public support.

  5. Course Objectives • By the end of the course you will be able to: • Describe the various ways in which the police and media interact • Set out a media plan to support an investigation or operation • Create core messages and supporting information for use in an interview • Risk assess interactions with the press • Prepare for an interview with the press • Make an appeal for information • Be interviewed on an issue of police procedure/practice • Describe the Abu Dhabi Police policy on working with the media

  6. The Media • Play a major part in the relationship between the police and the public. • The way most people learn about the police and about policing; and • They are a key route to gain information and intelligence.

  7. The Course • Consider 6 case studies in which they will explore: • Abu Dhabi Police approach to media relations. • A simple request for information after a road traffic accident. • The experience in the United Kingdom where boundaries are not maintained and how to ensure this does not happen in Abu Dhabi. • A more complex request for information following a series incident. • An interview on an issue of concern to the public. • Preparing a press and media strategy.

Dealings with the Media Group Work In your groups discuss occasions that you have had to deal with the media, encountered them in something you dealt with or aware of something involving the media: • What was the situation • What were the good points regarding the Media? • What were the bad points regarding the Media?

  15. Media policy To attain our goals we follow a media and promotional policy that gains our community’s trust and identifies and tackles areas of mutual concern through targeted channels. This ensures we engage with all sectors of the community to guarantee our messaging is accepted and welcomed. To achieve this we give examples of key campaigns and methods below:

  16. Media policy Keeping up to date with the younger generation and an understanding of their interests and hobbies with attractive and modern promotional and media methods. For example the launch of ‘Falcon Bike’ which, bearing the Abu Dhabi Police logo, has been a major attraction at a number of major events and allowed us to engage with a key sector of the community.

Media policy Participation and engagement in high profile local and international events, creating an innovative, interactive and entertaining environment for the public to clearly disseminate our awareness messages. The launch of the F999 ahead of the Abu Dhabi Formula One Grand Prix had a huge local and international impact across traditional and new media. It allowed us to convey the road safety message.

  18. Media policy Releasing awareness messages in an indirect but entertaining way. For example, out TV campaign to coincide with the FIFA Club World Cup. “Abu Dhabi Police… One Team… One Goal… Your Safety” Used a football theme to reflect the occasion and delivered a message to the public that we work as an integral part of these events to ensure the safety of our society.
