  2. Date Built, How Old? • The workers started the construction on Notre Dame in 1163 • From 1163 to 2013 it is 850 years old and still standing • It took roughly 180 years to build • Notre Dame was finally completed in 1345

  3. Who Designed It? • The architect for Notre Dame was Maurice de Sully • He was a bishop of Paris • His task was to create a building that was in a gothic style

  4. Why Was Notre Dame Built? • Notre Dame was built to honor the Virgin Mary • They built Notre Dame so it could be a church to people can go to. • Also, Notre means our and Dame means lady

  5. Important Facts • The first stone of Notre Dame was blessed in 1163 by Pope Alexander the third • In the front of the building there are 28 statues that represent the monarchs of Judea and Israel • In 1991, people started a 10 years renovation process, because the cathedral is so old that some of the pressure points are going to be supported by some scaffolds

More Important Facts • Notre Dame is such a landmark in Paris that it was decided that all distances would be measured from Notre Dame • There was a story of how Notre Dame was almost burnt down because a group of chairs was set on fire • If you want to get to one of the towers of Notre Dame you would have to climb 387 steps

  7. Where is it located? • The one and only Notre Dame is located in the one and only Paris, France • Notre Dame is also located in the middle of Paris • Finally, Notre Dame is located in “city island” in Paris

Style/Description • Notre Dame is built in a gothic style • It is also built as a cathedral with a beautiful interior with a huge stain glass piece when you first walk in. • One of the stain glasses is called the rose window, it is the most famous of them all and it draws tourists from all around the world • The Rose window is on the next slide

Why is Notre Dame Famous? • Notre Dame is famous because of its interior; the pews provide a outstanding view of the pulpit and everything behind it • Also, the two towers that stand tall at the entrance of the building attract people too • Finally, the pure tallness attracts people even if they did not go their to look at Notre Dame
