  1. Describe two similarities and two differences between innate and learned animal behaviors. • List and describe the pathway of a fixed action pattern. Name one example. • Differentiate between kinesis and taxis • Determine the direction and type of the orientation response: • Mosquitoes use heat waves to find animals • Vines crawl up on rough surfaces by touching around and sensing these surfaced with their tendrils • Some flatworms sense light and move away from it.

  2. Define what habituation is. • Give an example of imprinting. • Why are reflexes necessary even in humans? • Explain an experiment that modeled operant conditioning. • Give an example of an organism that follows a daily rhythm. Describe the environmental cues that set this rhythm. • Give an example of an animal that follows a yearly rhythm. Describe the environmental cues that set this rhythm.

  3. Explain how the internal clocks are set in humans. • Describe an experiment that can be used to collect data on the daily activity of animals. • Go to the human biorhythms page in your handout. Give an example of a blood component that peaks in the afternoon and one that peaks at night while we are asleep. • List three compass mechanisms that can be used by animals for migration. Explain how one is tested in a lab.

  4. List three environmental reasons that can result in migration. • Give an example of a specific animal that migrates and name a specific reason why they migrate. • Give two environmental reasons why hibernation occurs. Give an example of an animal that hibernate. • Describe the physiological changes of animals during hibernation. • List three ways for animals to communicate with one specific example each.

  5. List three advantages and two disadvantages of social groupings among animals. • Distinguish between pheromones and hormones. • Explain the significance why pheromones must be specific. • Give three examples and describe the role of pheromones in each example.
