Reading in Math • Everything in reading is a close read; have to read for DETAIL, can’t skim • GOAL = SLOW DOWN & REREAD • Have to know the vocabulary (non-examples are just as important as examples) • Model to build habit • How do you know what to do? • What does it look like? • What is the action? • What are your options?

  3. Word Problems 1st read = read through 2nd read = read and highlight what they don’t know or understand 3rd read = identify the goal 4th read = identify supporting details, formulas, or other info needed to answer the problem

  4. Word Problems Goal (purpose) = 1 point Supporting details = 1 point Show work = 2 points Answer in sentence form = 1 point

  5. Journal Writing • Writing to learn math • Grading the math, not the writing • Get kids to write daily • Engages everyone • Easy to differentiate • Emphasizes vocabulary • Show me what you know • Good formative assessment

Types of Writing Descriptive Procedural “Explain how you would…” More organized Summarizes a process Don’t have to write every step 5-10 points Can move on to other types at any time • “Tell me what you know about…” • Types 1 and 2 (may be easier to give a # of things, not lines in math) • Describes an idea/concept • 5 points • Build habit and stamina • Should master descriptive before moving on to other types of writing
