  2. Malsch Techno Valuation Opportunities for participating in EU FP7 Table of contents: 1. Introduction – the EU 7th Framework Programme for RTD 2. Opportunities for researchers in International Cooperation Partner Countries (including Latin America) – NMP programme 3. People programme 4. Capacities programme 5. Conclusions and further information

  3. Malsch Techno Valuation Opportunities for participating in EU FP7 Introduction – the EU 7th Framework Programme for RTD (2007-2013): • FP7 is short for 7th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development • It is the European Union’s main instrument for funding research in Europe between 2007 and 2013 • FP7 supports research in selected priority areas including nanotechnology

  4. Malsch Techno Valuation Opportunities for participating in EU FP7 Introduction – Structure of FP7 (2007-2013): • Cooperation – Collaborative research, 32413 million euro (incl. NMP 3475 million euro) • People – Mobility of researchers, 4750 million euro • Capacities – Research capacity 4097 million euro (incl. activ. of international cooperation 180 million euro) • Total FP7: 50521 million euro

  5. Malsch Techno Valuation Opportunities for participating in EU FP7 Cooperation, 32365 million euro, Collaborative research projects involving researchers, industry and SMEs from all over Europe and the rest of the world: • Health • Food, Agriculture and Biotechnology • Information and Communication Technologies • Nano-sciences, nano-technologies, materials and new production technologies

  6. Malsch Techno Valuation Opportunities for participating in EU FP7 Cooperation - 2: • Energy • Environment (including Climate Change) • Transport (including Aeronautics) • Socio-economic Sciences and Humanities • Space • Security

  7. Malsch Techno Valuation Opportunities for participating in EU FP7 People - 4750 million euro - Marie Curie actions (open to 3rd country participants): • Initial training of researchers • Marie Curie networks • Industry-Academia pathways and partnerships • Industry-academia knowledge-sharing scheme • International dimension • Incoming international fellowships

  8. Malsch Techno Valuation Opportunities for participating in EU FP7 Capacities – Research capacity including in International Cooperation Partner Countries, 4097 million euro: • Research infrastructures • Research for the benefit of SMEs • Regions of Knowledge • Research Potential • Science in Society • Coherent development of policies • Activities of International Cooperation

  9. Malsch Techno Valuation Opportunities for participating in EU FP7 EU International Cooperation Policy objectives: • To support European competitiveness through strategic partnerships with third countries in selected fields of science and by engaging the best third country scientists to work in and with Europe. • To enhance the production of knowledge and scientific excellence by enabling European universities, research institutions and firms to establish contact with their partners in third countries, thereby facilitating access to research environments outside Europe and promoting synergies on a global scale. • To address specific problems that third countries face or that have a global character, on the basis of mutual interest and mutual benefit.

  10. Malsch Techno Valuation Opportunities for participating in EU FP7 Opportunities for researchers in International Cooperation Partner Countries – NMP programme (3475 million euro): • At least 3 partners in 3 different European countries plus optional additional partners from other countries incl. Latin America • Project coordinator should be from EU member state or associated state • Bottleneck: find EU partners and get invited to join consortium • Calls for proposals open twice a year (next this month)

  11. Malsch Techno Valuation Opportunities for participating in EU FP7 Opportunities for ICPC researchers (incl. Latin America) – People programme: • Marie Curie networks - young researchers from 3rd countries can apply for fellowships in Initial Training Networks (ITN) and Incoming international fellowships: http://ec.europa.eu/research/fp6/mariecurie-actions/indexhtm_en.html • Industry-academia knowledge-sharing scheme – staff exchange programme, at least 1 academic and 1 industrial partner from different European countries, plus optional additional partners from outside the EU, http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/people/industry-academia_en.html

  12. Malsch Techno Valuation Opportunities for participating in EU FP7 Opportunities for researchers in International Cooperation Partner Countries (including Latin America) – Capacities programme: • Specific International Cooperation Actions • At least 2 partners in at least 2 European countries plus at least 2 partners in at least 2 ICPC countries • http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/capacities/international-cooperation_en.html

  13. Malsch Techno Valuation Opportunities for participating in EU FP7 To conclude: • The European FP7 research programme is open to research collaboration with the whole world, including Latin America • The main bottlenecks appear to be: • A lack of awareness of these opportunities among eligible researchers • A lack of existing networks and contacts between researchers in Europe and Latin America • Low visibility of Latin America’s untapped nanotechnology potential in Europe
