Here is a comparison of the present and preterite of regular –arverbs: TOMAR  presentepretérito (yo) tomo (-o) tomé (-é) (tú) tomas (-as) tomaste (-aste) (Ud., él/ella) toma (-a) tomó (-ó) (nosotros/as) tomamos (-amos) tomamos (-amos) (vosotros/as) tomáis (-áis) tomasteis (-asteis) (Uds., ellos/as) toman (-an) tomaron (-aron) Los chicostoman un examen. Los chicostomaron un examen. The kids take/are taking a test. The kids took a test.

Here is a comparison of regular –erverbs in the present and preterite. comer presentepretérito (yo) como (-o) comí (-í) (tú) comes (-es) comiste (-iste) (Ud., él/ella) come (-e) comió (-ió) (nosotros/as) comemos(-emos) comimos (-imos) (vosotros/as) coméis (-éis) comisteis (-isteis) (Uds., ellos/as) comen (-en) comieron (-ieron) Marta comeunas papas fritas. Marta comióunas papas fritas. Marta eats/is eating some fries. Marta ate some fries.

  4. Stem-changing verbs that end in –arand –erdo not have a stem change in the preterite. Cierro la puerta. (I close the door.) Cerré la puerta. (I closed the door.) Verbs that end in –car (sacar, buscar, tocar) have a spelling change in the yo form: yo saqué, yo busqué, yo toqué Verbs that end in –gar (llegar, pagar) also have a spelling change in the yo form: yollegué, yopagué

  5. VER has no accents in the preterite: vi vimos viste visteis vio vieron

  6. OÍR has the following preterite forms: oí oímos oíste oísteis oyó oyeron

  7. Common time expressions for past tense: anoche - last night ayer – yesterday anteayer – the day before yesterday la semana pasada – lastweek el mes pasado – lastmonth el año pasado – lastyear una vez – once dos veces - twice
