  3. Advantages of Storyboarding • It is extremely inexpensive. • It is friendly, informal, and interactive. • It provides an early view of the user interfaces of the system. • It is easy to create and easy to modify.

Types of Storyboards • Passive storyboards • Tell a story to the user. • Consist of sketches, pictures, screen shots, PowerPoint presentations, or sample application outputs. • Walks the user through the storyboard, with a "When you do this, this happens" explanation. • Active storyboards • Try to make the user see "a movie that hasn't actually been produced yet.“ • Provide an automated description of the way the system behaves in a typical usage or operational scenario.

Navigation Strategies • Linear: Users navigate sequentially, from one frame or bite of information to another. • Hierarchical: Also called “linear with branching,” since users navigate along the branches of a tree structure that is shaped by the natural logic of the content. • Nonlinear: Users navigate freely through the content of the project, unbound by predetermined routes. • Composite: Users may navigate freely (nonlinearly), but are occasionally constrained to linear presentations of movies or critical information and/or to data that is most logically organized in a hierarchy. Storyboards A storyboard for the same project (that teaches the basics of animation), is organized sequentially, screen by screen, and each screen is sketched out with design notes and specifications. On the left are parts of the storyboard and on the right are corresponding finished screens.

  15. Mines Rescue • Draft Brief • The proposed project is a bespoke, interactive educational presentation titled “Mine Rescue”. The presentation will be run on a touch screen kiosk within the Scottish Mining Museum. • The aims of the application are to provide information on: • The history of mine rescue • How a mine rescue team functions • The equipment which is used • A mine rescue simulation • A guide to where to find associated exhibits in the museum • The presentation will be directed at school children aged 5-12year and designed to facilitate completion within 5 minutes. It will be presented in an innovative, child friendly and stimulating style. It will assume familiarity with a multimedia environment and an understanding of how to utilise touch screen technology. • navigation will be accomplished by utilising touch screen for pointing • six screens will be used each one containing a high degree of interactivity • a character called Tam the Miner will narrate the presentation and will be on every screen • a character called Davie Lamp will help navigate the presentation • minimal use of text which will be presented in a "child friendly font" • voice-overs will be used to give additional information to users • background sounds will be used to create atmosphere • the history of mine rescue, and the rescue simulation will be presented as animated movies running within the relevant screen • archive video will be used if available • The presentation will be delivered via a Windows 95 desktop to MPC 3 standard and use the ISO 9660 format. The project window will be 800 by 600 pixels. • Authorware will be used as the main development environment with Director used for developing movies and animations.
