  1. Judging

  2. Most misused passages in the NT: John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. Matthew 7:1 “Judge not, that you be not judged.

  3. John 3:16 – Faith Only? • It no more teaches salvation by faith only than Acts 11:18 teaches salvation by repentance only • Acts 11:18 - When they heard these things they became silent; and they glorified God, saying, “Then God has also granted to the Gentiles repentance to life.” CONTRADICTION

  4. Matthew 7:1 – No Judging? • Behavior is sinful? Who are we to judge? • Teach false doctrine? Judge not…

  5. “Judge” In Matthew 7:1 The word judge could as easily be translated “condemn” in Matthew 7. • Check the center column of your bible. • “Condemn” is an equivalent translation in this passage. • Greek word “krino,” Strong’s number G2919. • Numerous definitions, one of which is “condemn” that is the sense of the word here.

  6. Matthew 7:1 – The Context • Read v. 1-5. • Notice especially v. 5. • Jesus doesn’t tell us to ignore the speck. • He tells us to be sure we can see clearly enough to remove it. • Read v. 6. • We must judge who are “dogs” and “swine.”

  7. Hypocrisy Is The Sin Romans 2:1-2 Therefore you are inexcusable, O man, whoever you are who judge, for in whatever you judge another you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things. 2 But we know that the judgment of God is according to truth against those who practice such things.

  8. Hypocrisy Is The Sin • John 7:21-24 • Judging is not condemned, but the way in which they were doing it. • Jesus says judge righteously, not according to appearance.

  9. If we can’t judge, we can’t obey God. • Galatians 6:1-3 • More than one judgment is required in this passage. • We must determine who is overtaken in a sin. • We must determine if we are spiritual, and consider ourselves lest we be tempted. • Notice the similarity to Matthew 7:1-5

  10. If we can’t judge, we can’t obey God. • 1 Corinthians 5:1-5 • Corinthian church had an adulterer in their midst. • He wasn’t doing this secretly. It was open to all. • They refused to judge him and get him out of there. • Their failure to judge was a sin in itself. V. 6-13 • Their refusal to judge left a brother’s soul in danger. V. 5 • They heeded Paul’s admonition and did what they were supposed to do, and see the conclusion of the matter. • 2 Corinthians 2:3-11

  11. If we can’t judge, we can’t obey God. James 5:19-20 • We have to be willing to make a judgment regarding a brother in order to save his soul. • We have to educate ourselves not only for our own good, but for the good of our brothers and sisters. • We must have enough love and concern for a brother to tell him when he’s erring. Cf. Aquila and Priscilla, Acts 18:24-28

  12. We need to be careful in applying our judgment. Romans 14:1-13 • We cannot pass judgment on matters of opinion (matters of indifference to God). • We have to be careful not to try to bind our opinions on our brothers and sisters. • We are all at different stages of Christian development; our opinions about some things are going to be different. • We have to be able to recognize matters of indifference to God. • Baptism and marriage divorce and remarriage are not.

  13. We need to be careful in applying our judgment. James 2:1-4 • We must not judge people based on appearances. • Appearances, riches, looks etc. are not proper standards for judgment.

  14. We will all be judged some day. Jesus is the judge. • John 5:25-30 We will all stand before him some day. • 2 Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. Every knee shall bow. • Philippians 2:10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth,

  15. We will all be judged some day. We will be judged according to our deeds. • Romans 2:6 who “will render to each one according to his deeds” According to the Word of Jesus. • John 12:48 He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him—the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day. • the gospel as preached by Paul and the apostles • Romans 2:16 in the day when God will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel.

  16. Get Ready For The Judgment! • Believe – John 3:16 • Repent – Acts 11:18 • Confess - Romans 10:10 • Be Baptized – Mark 16:16 • Be Faithful – Revelation 2:10
