  2. Disagreements • The biggest disagreement between the North and South was over states’ rights and slavery. States’ Rights Slavery

  3. Northern Industry • Southerners had developed bad feelings toward the North over slavery and the growth of industry. • People in the South depended on the North for manufactured goods. • Tariffs on imports created a dependency on Northern goods.

  4. Western Growth • Slavery was a hot topic with western expansion. • As settlers moved west, they also took with them their way of life. • For those from the North this was a life without slaves. • Settlers from the South took their enslaved workers with them.

  5. Slavery in the West? • It was not long before the question of the spread of slavery to the west became the most argued issue in the country. South North Slavery should not be allowed in the western lands. Slavery should be allowed in the western lands.

  6. A Fierce Fight • Northerners thought that slavery should go no farther than where it already was – in the South. • Southerners believed that slave owners had the right to take their slaves wherever they wanted, including to the west. • The number of slaves in the U.S. continued to grow as did the number of slaves taken west.
