To meet the needs of students in urban communities that have been marginalized economically, socially, and politically Demographic trends are a reality Pre-service teachers need positive contacts with diverse student populations Many teaching positions in urban areas for high-quality, well-prepared candidates

    3. We prepare urban teachers to: To understand the values and lifestyles of urban families and cultures Construct teaching strategies that are linked to local realities Challenge and change their own assumptions Make issues of diversity an explicit part of the curriculum

    4. Gain practical hands-on experience in inner-city classrooms with students whose cultural and economic backgrounds may be different from your own.

    7. Participate in community activities in which you will interact with students, parents and community members in more informal settings

    14. Attend professional development seminars conducted by Philadelphia teachers.

    17. Promote networking and support among education students from the several universities.

    20. Interact in learning forums with pre-service teachers who have a focus on urban education.

Key Components of the Partnership: A formal signed agreement General goals are spelled out A cultural immersion experience 200 students– stipend for food & Lodging A student teaching experience 100 students – stipend for housing & relocation The employment of highly qualified, urban prepared teachers
