  4. The Federal Court System • Divided into 3 layers: • District Courts: • Hear Criminal and Civil Cases • Appellate Courts • Hear Appeals • The Supreme Court • Highest Court in the Land

  5. The Supreme Court • Nine Justices • Led by the Chief Justice • Serve for life • Highest Court in the Land • Hear appeals from federal and state courts • Hear disputes among the states • Hear cases involving foreign ambassadors

  6. Becoming a Federal Judge • No Constitutional Qualifications • Appointed by the President • Approved by the Senate

  7. Judicial Review • Most important power of the Judiciary • Can declare laws and government actions UNCONSTITUTIONAL • Not found in the Constitution • Implied with the Supremacy Clause • First outlined in Marbury v. Madison (1803)
