  1. The Gospel According to Markpart 5“The Lord of the Sabbath”Mark 2:18 – 3:6

  2. In those days, it was customary for the Pharisees to fast twice per week. Yet, here was Jesus and His disciples feasting with sinners.

  3. Jesus of course was referring to Himself as the bridegroom, a metaphor He will often use in the future.

  4. Two points Jesus was making: Jesus was saying He was the bridegroom and He was spending time with His friends, so there was no expectation for them to fast, but rather to celebrate with Him. Jesus was foretelling there would come a time for fasting, namely, that time when He would go away.

  5. What is Sabbath? • The Hebrew word is “Shabbat” which means “to rest.” The Jews were given the command to rest or Shabbat every week.

  6. Who is bound or under this command to keep the Sabbath? • Clearly, all Jews are intended to keep the Sabbath in perpetuity, as a covenant between God and the children of Israel, forever.

  7. Jesus even admits it was unlawful for David to eat it, yet Jesus offers this as a defense! • In fact, Jesus never offers the idea of innocence of either David or His disciples, why?

  8. Because that was never the point Jesus wanted to make, it was much, much bigger. • Jesus is the Lord of the Sabbath. The very one who set this day aside and blessed it, has every right to Lord over it, to keep it anyway He wants, or even to not keep it all.

  9. They are not even arguing His ability to heal, only that He may heal on the Sabbath. You bet they kept silent, no matter what they said, Jesus would have showed them their hypocrisy.

  10. Notice the drama Jesus creates. He gets the man ready, turns to the Pharisees and asks them a question. They cannot answer without condemning themselves. He looks right into the eyes of each of the Pharisees and gives them a bit of stare, the silence is deafening, then He turns back to the man and says, “Stretch out your hand.” And the hand is whole!

  11. Why were they so mad? Jesus continually outsmarted, out maneuvered, and out played them.

  12. The Greek word used is “ap-ol'-loo-mee”, which means to “kill” or to “put an end to” to “utterly destroy.”

  13. If the seventh day of the week (Saturday) is the Sabbath, why don’t we worship on Sabbath? According to Ex 20:8) The act of keeping Sabbath is: not laboring.

  14. This bodes the question: Who must keep and observe the Sabbath? Again, Ex 31:17) tells us, it is specific to the children of Israel as a covenant between God and them.

  15. Jesus was saying “God did not create the Sabbath as a day to honor Himself, therefore He created man to have someone play out that role. Jesus was saying, I made the Sabbath for your benefit, to give you rest, a chance to be free from your labors and commune with Me in rest.

  16. This rest or Sabbath is: Eternity

  17. We can place our trust in Jesus, because Jesus is the Lord of all. Even the Lord of the Sabbath.
