  1. Freshman Orientation

  2. Program of Studies • Website - www.npsd.k12.nj.us • Go to NPHS • Click on the Guidance tab • On the left, click on 2012-2013 Program of Studies Book • Click on 2012-2013 Program of Studies Book

  3. New Providence High School • Rotate through 8 periods • School starts at 8:05 • School ends at 2:40 • Not much flexibility in your schedule as a freshman

  4. Example of Schedule • 1. Math • 2. Physical Education / Health • 3. Science • 4. World Language • 5. Social Studies • 6. Lunch • 7. Language Arts • 8. Elective

  5. Honors Classes • Grade must be an A- or higher for the specific subject • Placement test • Language Arts • Science • Social Studies • Spanish

  6. Why isn’t there a placement test for Math? • If you are not currently on the honors track for Math, you can NOT go into the honors math class as a freshman. • Since Algebra T/A is offered in middle school, it is not offered in high school. • Students in MS that are already taking Algebra T/A must maintain an overall B average to continue on the honors track. • Students will have the opportunity to enter the honors track for math as a sophomore.

  7. World Language • Choices: • Spanish 1-College Prep • Spanish 2-College Prep • French 1 • Italian 1 • Japanese 1

  8. Electives • Visual and Performing Arts • Band • Drawing • Orchestra • Graphic Design • Chorus • Painting and Design • Music Theory • Theatre Production • Beginning Drama • Sculpture • Broadcast Journalism ● Media Design * If you are interested in taking voice class, please write that on your course request sheet.

  9. Electives • 21st Century Life and Careers or Career-Technical Education • Foods • Fabric Arts • Technology and Design

  10. Wrap Around Class • The classes below will meet 3 days per week and interlock with the 2 days per week for the science lab days. • Band/Lab • Orchestra/Lab • Chorus/Lab • Painting and Design/Lab

  11. Zero Period • Zero period frees up a period during the school day for you to take another class • The ONLY class offered zero period is Physical Education / Health • Not recommended for freshman • Only consideration is if you are on the Honors Science track

  12. 1. Math 2. Physical Education/ Health 3. Science 4. World Language 5. Social Studies 6. Lunch 7. Elective 8. Language Arts 0. Physical Education/ Health 1. Math 2. Lab / wrap around class 3. Science 4. World Language 5. Social Studies 6. Lunch 7. Elective 8. Language Arts How Zero Period Works

  13. Sports Study • You can have a study hall in place of physical education only during the time that you are in a sport at NPHS. • This option is only available for the sports offered at NPHS. • If you have your health class during the same time you are in a sport, you have to go to your health class and will not have a study hall.

  14. Credits • The number of credits you receive for a class is based on the number of periods per week and semesters per year a course meets • Example: If you meet 5 days/week for the entire year, you will receive 5 credits for the course

  15. Attendance • A student’s absence from classes scheduled for a course of study more than 10% of the days in which the class meets shall NOT receive credit for that course. • In other words…a student absent from a class in excess of 9 days in a semester course, or in excess of 18 days in a full year course will receive NO credit for the course.

  16. Due Date ● After you register online through Powerschool, hit submit, and print the course request sheet. ● Please be sure to put your name on the course request sheet and have a parent/guardian sign it. ● Please write down 2 alternative choices for electives on the course request sheet in case you do not get into to your 1st choice. ● This form must be handed in to your middle school counselor no later than January 24th! Even if you do not plan on attending NPHS, you still MUST hand in the course request sheet.

  17. Questions/Concerns • Please make an appointment with your counselor if you have any questions • Stop by the main office in the morning to tell your counselor that you would like to meet and we will set up a time (preferably homeroom or study hall) • Mrs. Chrisostomides A-L • Ms. McCauley M-Z
