  2. What’s it all about? It’s all about the firsts of putting man in space.

Russian Firsts • Vostok (Russian for East) first manned spaceflight program. • Yuri Gagarin chosen as the first cosmonaut in space. • April 12, 1961 Vostok 1 was launched. • Flight only lasted 108 minutes (reached an apogee of 203 miles and a perigee of 112 miles) • Four months later Vostok 2 launched with Gherman Titov, it stayed in orbit for 25hr. and 18min. • Vostok 3 and 4 launched from the same pad one day apart in August of 1962,marking the first simultaneous flight of two manned spacecraft.

Russian firsts cont. • The orbits of Vostok 3 and 4 were so accurate that the vessels came within 4 miles of each other. • The radio conversations between Andrian Nikolayev and Pavel Popovich marked the first ship to ship communications. • Valentina Tereshkova was the first civilian and woman in space.

  5. To infinity and beyond • In 1962 the Soviets began developing their own lunar landing project called Soyuz. • This spacecraft was called Voskhod. • Voskhod launched on Oct. 12, 1964. • There were 3 cosmonauts in the craft Vladimir Komarov, Boris Yegorov, and Konstantin Feoktistov; marking the first spaceflight to carry more than one human into space. • Voskhod 2 launched March 18, 1865 with Aleksei Leonov and Pavel Belyayev. • Leonov became the first human to ever attempt an EVA (extravehicular activity).
