People live in shanty towns because they have no choice. Favela – The name given to shanty towns in Brazil. Local authority – local government, they try to ‘manage’ the city. Self-help Schemes– Where local authorities or charities support shanty town dwellers to produce higher quality homes by providing land, small loans, cheap building materials and basic services.
