Cell Organelles

Explore the different types of cells (prokaryotic, eukaryotic, plants, animals, fungi) and the common parts found in all cells. Learn about organelles like the nucleus, ribosomes, endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria, Golgi complex, vesicles, lysosomes, as well as unique features of plant cells like cell walls, vacuoles, and chloroplasts.

  1. Cell Organelles

  2. *Review*Types of Cells • Prokaryotic • Bacteria • Archaea • Eukaryotic • Plants • Animals • Fungi

  3. *Review*Common Parts in All Cells • Cell Membrane- Protective layer that covers the cell’s surface • Cytoplasm- The fluid found inside a cell • Organelles- Structures that perform specialized functions within a cell

  4. Other Organelles in a Cell • Nucleus, Ribosomes, Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER), Mitochondria, Golgi Complex, Vesicles, Lysosomes • Plants also contain Cell Walls, Vacuoles, and Chloroplasts

  5. Nucleus • Found only in Eukaryotic Cells • Contains the cell’s DNA • Control center of the cell

  6. Ribosomes • Organelle that makes proteins • Smallest of all organelles • More ribosomes than any other organelles

  7. Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) • System of folded membranes • Part of the internal delivery system of the cell • Contains many tubes and passageways • Substances move through the ER to different places in the cell

  8. “ER”- People go through the ER to get to other places in the hospital!

  9. Mitochondria • Powerhouse of the cell • Organelle in which sugar is broken down to produce energy • Cell uses the energy to do work

  10. The “Mighty” Mitochondria! – Powerhouse! • Cannotdo workwithoutenergy!

  11. Golgi Complex • Organelle that helps make and package materials to be transported out of the cell or to other parts of the cell • Packaged material is stored in a vesicle

  12. Golgi Compl-EX….Fed-EX… Package and transport materials!

  13. Vesicles • A small cavity or sack that contains materials • Created in the Golgi Complex • Can move out of the cell or to other parts within the cell

  14. Vesicles- created in Golgi Complex…contain materials and transports them where they need to go!

  15. Lysosomes • Cell organelles that contain digestive enzymes • Digests food particles, gets rid of waste material, and protects the cell from foreign invaders • Mainly in animal cells

  16. Lysosomes- get rid of waste, protects cell from foreign invaders

  17. Cell Wall – Plant Cell Only! • A rigid structure that surrounds the cell membrane • Gives support to the cell

  18. Vacuole- Plant Cell Only! • A type of vesicle found in plant cells • Aid in digestion within the cell • Stores water and other liquids which help to support the cell

  19. Vacuole…Vacuums store objects too

  20. Chloroplast- Plant Cell Only! • Organelle found in plant cells in which photosynthesis takes place • Uses the energy of sunlight to make food • Are green in color

  21. Animal Cell

  22. Plant Cell
