  2. The Alamo • Because of the lose of San Antonio; Santa Anna was furious and started the Alamo. • The Texans only had about 180 people to face Santa Anna’s several thousand. • After a fierce fight the Texans were executed.

  3. General Santa Anna • President of Mexico. • Agrees to the first request of the Texans which is remove the band on settlers. • Named himself dictator and overthrew Mexico’s constitution of 1824.

  4. Davy Crockett • Arrived with a band of sharpshooters. • A brave leader in the Alamo.

  5. William B. Travis • The Commander • Was only 23 years old, but was determined to hold his position as Commander. • Sent messages out through Mexican lines.

  6. Sam Houston • Commander in Chief of the Texas forces. • Came to Texas in 1832 • Raised among the Cherokee people • He became a solider with Andrew Jackson fighting against the Creek people.

  7. Why Did This Happen? • They placed a tax on imported goods which angered the Texans. • The Mexican government issued a decree that stopped all immigration from the U.S. • The colonists who held slaves were uneasy about the Mexican governments plan to end slavery.

  8. Independent Mexico • Opened Santa Fe to American trade in 1821. • The 900-mile Santa Fe Trail from Missouri was loaded with wagons and goods. • The Mexican war started in 1846, the U.S. dominated New Mexico’s economy that the governor did not resist.

  9. Texas Declaration Of Independence The Texans were: • Deprived of freedom of religion. They now have the: • Right to trial by jury. • Right to bear arms. • Right to petition.
