  1. LEIR Status C. Carli on behalf of the LEIR team • Summary of what happened since the January “shutdown” • Outlook until completion of LEIR commissioning LEIR Commissioning Status

  2. Summary of what happened since the January “shutdown” • Start with beam on February 9th (still doubts on charge state) • Delay due to beam (mainly source) not available (in the shadow ER.SMH40 installation) • Controls (still a lot of debugging): • OASIS (blocked very often), • LSA based programs (magnetic cycle and orbit):New version of magnetic cycle programs (new data base) -> several times not available • Working sets and knobs:FESA 2.7 to allow PPM copies on some DSCs, knobs improved • In general, good collaboration with CO experts. • Ion source still often unavailable despite lower current (agreed for reliability) • Again difficulties with the injection line : • Thought to have a good setting (beam looked nice after septa on ER.MTV12), • But the beam size and dispersion was large (collimated by septum ?), • New setting (new measurements at Linac 3 and correcting wrong quad scaling factors) allowed to improve (best injection efficiency > 40%). • Still some room for improvements. • First injection and circulating again easy (on February 15th), but difficulties to increase efficiency due to line matching • Transverse damper setting-up crucial for cooling & accumulation studies LEIR Commissioning Status

  3. Summary of what happened since the January “shutdown” • Electron Cooling: • First clear signs on March 3rd • Accumulation of 9E8 Pb54+ ionson March 10th Time evolution of longitudinal Schottky spectra Dense cooled beam large mom. spread just after injection Accumulation of about the nominal intensity - within 6s instead of 1.6s (without. collimation), - emittances (vertical ?) not yet measured, - life-time of 6.5 s after accumulation and with cooling. LEIR Commissioning Status

  4. Outlook until completion of LEIR commissioning • Less than five weeks left until scheduled completion !! • Still to be done : • Optimization of cooling and accumulation : • Good overlap of electrons and ions, • Prove vertical cooling, • Accumulation (two or three shots) to compensate low intensity from source. • Collimation and scrubbing • Acceleration (RF system and optics perturbation due to Eddy current effect), • Further injection line studies ? • Ejection (tricky ejection bump) • Transfer towards the PS: • Up to TV station just before PS injection hardware, • Verify matching in the ETL line (afterwards smooth optics – problems unlikely ?) • It looks difficult to complete LEIR commissioning until April 21st, but with a bit of good luck and a lot of effort, we still may make it. LEIR Commissioning Status

  5. Injection efficicecy with improved injection line : - based on new Linac 3 measurements and correcting quad scaling factors, - low and high momenta injected (smaller dispersion), - still a (small) improvement needed, => injection line studies should continue. back LEIR Commissioning Status
