Brief Overview • Compared to copper & twisted pair cabling Fiber…. - travels the longest distance - more expensive - light-weight - is not susceptible to lightning - is EMI (electromagnetic interference) & RMI (radio frequency interference) - more secure than other media because its difficult to tap into it & its easy to detect someone tapping it

Small core Less dispersion of light rays Suited for long distance aps (up to 3km, 9841 ft) Uses lasers as the light source of then within campus backbones for distance of thousand meters Larger core Greater dispersion & therefore loss of signal Used for long distance aps but shorter than single-mode (up to 2km, 6560 ft) Uses LEDs as the light source within LANs or distance of a couple hundred meters within several campus networks Single-mode vs. Multi-mode

FTTH – Fiber to the Home • Fiber is now being offered to customers • An approach to the last-mile problem of giving residences high-speed broadband access to digital services and Internet access. • Instead of using such technologies as copper-based DSL, FFTH systems involve the installation of optical fiber from homes to a central point.

  7. Fiber-to-the-Home Fiber-to-the-Curb (FTTC): Fiber optic service to a node connected by wires to several nearby homes, typically on a block. Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH): Fiber optic service to a node located inside an individual home.

FACTS • The technology promises speeds of up to 30M bit/sec and can bring high-speed service to homes at a greater distance from central switch than DSL (6.2 to 49.6 miles, as opposed to a new few thousand feet for DSL • It cost considerably more than DSL or existing cable services, since they typically require the installation of an entirely new set of connections to individual home
