PAHO Activities • Set up a Task Force to work with themes related to surveillance, laboratory diagnosis and prevention of West Nile Virus in the Region. • Publish their recommendations on the PAHO web. • Implement surveillance of West Nile Virus through regional surveillance networks: • RECACER (Central America) • Amazon Network • Southern Cone Network

  6. PAHO Activities • Training in WNV surveillance and diagnostics for epidemiologists, laboratory personnel and veterinarians, with CDC collaborating. • 2002:CAREC 23 participants from Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Cayman Islands, Cuba, French Guiana, Colombia, Brazil, and Venezuela. • 2003:Gorgas Institute and Ministry of Agriculture (Panama) 35 participants from Dominican Republic, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama.

  7. PAHO Activities • Distributing reactives to all laboratories participating in the training. • For 2003, Plan to strengthen laboratory diagnostic capacity for equine encephalitis viruses, including regional production of the necessary supplies.
