  3. All of these things combine to hamper this region in its economic and social progress • All of these help create Political instability for most countries in the region

South Asia-BE • Indus river civilization-Hinduism-Caste system is established • Birth of Siddhartha …Buddha 6th century B.C. • 900’s Islam diffuses into and through this region, by 1300’s the Punjab region is almost totally Muslim Islam appealed to the Hindus of the lower levels of the Caste system.

  8. British Economic Exploitation • Typical=as in the US • Changed India from a manufacturing country (exporting=profit) to a country that exported raw materials

  9. Imported finished (manufactured) goods- • Increased costs hurt farmers the most-majority of the populations were farmers

  10. British Economic Exploitation (cont.) • British attempted to end the caste system- Still exists • British could not unify the subcontinent (South Asia) • Because the government attempted to meet agreements made by the British

  11. East India Company=these agreements -Created 600 sovereign territories -Small territories had “advisers”

  12. British Economic Exploitation (cont.) • Large ones had commissioners or Governors who would give and receive information-mandates-Laws, etc. from the “Viceroy of India”

  13. Who had to communicate needs-concern to and from parliament • British colonization had its positive influences also • Creation of the “Great Indian Railroad” highway system

  14. Positive influences of British colonization • Irrigation canals • Increased education • Stopped “suttee” Female Infanticide (child) arranged marriages “Caste System”

  18. Although India occupies only 2.4% of the world's land area, it supports over 16% of the world's population. Currently it is the second most populous nation on Earth, though if current trends persist, India will replace China as the most populous nation in less than 40 years. Almost 40% of Indians are younger than 15 years of age. More than 70% of the people live in more than 550,000 villages, and the remainder in more than 200 towns and cities.

  26. *Karma-refers to that which one does -This determines your status of rebirth *Moksha the ultimate goal of India religion is to stop the cycle of rebirth, “to achieve release”( The same as Buddhism’s “Nirvana”)
