  1. Polio By: Jackson Dye and Nhi Nguyen

  2. Jackson Dye Defining Polio • A viral disease • Existed since ancient days of humans history • Most of the time, there are no symptoms or you have sensitivity to light, or muscle paralysis in your ligaments

  3. Nhi Nguyen History • Evidence predates recorded history • 1789 – Michael Underwood gives first clinical description • 1908 – Karl Landsteiner and Erwin Popper identify virus as cause

  4. Jackson Dye Five Common Symptoms • Abortive polio– This type of polio has the symptoms of diarrhea, fever, and sore throat. These appear because the virus is attacking the intestinal track. • Nonparalyticpolio– This type of polio causes sensitivity to light, neck stiffness and other neurological symptoms. These symptoms occur from this strain of the polio virus attacking the intestinal track. • Paralytic polio– This type of polio causes muscle paralysis by leaving the intestinal track, entering the blood stream and attacking the nerves; which could be in charge of muscle groups and other systems. • Most polio cases develop no symptoms or affect the person

  5. Jackson Dye Polio at the Cellular Level

  6. Jackson Dye How Polio Spreads Person to Person • Spread through feces • Spread through the droplets from coughing and sneezing • It can contaminate food or water when people touch the food or water without washing their hands

  7. Jackson Dye Treatment of Polio • To prevent getting polio you can get a shot • If you get polio treatment consists of fluids, medication and rest

  8. Nhi Nguyen Most Susceptible People • Anyone of any age • Mostly vulnerable people: • Children under 5 years old • Young pregnant women

  9. Nhi Nguyen Recent Case • Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s first case of 2013 confirmed in Bannu district • Boy was not vaccinated because family refused due to religious misconceptions • No traces of OPV found in child’s body

  10. Nhi Nguyen Current Research • Billions of doses of oral vaccines distributed • Scientists look at largest record of cirulating vaccine-derived poliovirus (cVDPV) • Shows that it is easily spread • Shows that vaccination with OPV is highly effective • Even more effective against cVDPV than other types of polioviruses • Shows that it is very important that vaccination with OPV continues in Nigeria and other countries to protect children
