Characteristics • The god of Technology, Blacksmiths, craftsmen, artisans, sculptors, metals, metallurgy, fire and volcanoes • Was Lame “ had a shriveled foot” and was looked down upon by all the gods because of this • He made most of the equipment used by the gods • Was worshipped in manufacturing areas of Greece (Athens)

  3. Relations • Hephaestus was the son on Zeus and Hera • He was married to Aphrodite by Zeus so there was no conflict between her and the other gods, since he was the least desirable.

  5. How he was exiled… • 1st story: Hera threw Hephaestus down from the heavens because he had a shriveled foot. He fell into the ocean and was brought up by Thetis and the Ocean Eurynome. • 2nd Story: Hephaestus was trying to rescue his mother from Zeus but Zeus threw him down from heaven.

  6. His return… • The only god to return after exile • Hephaestus got revenge on his mother for rejecting him by sending her a magical golden throne. When she sat down she could never get back up. The other gods begged him to come back but he declared that he had no mother. Finally Dionysus came down to him and shared wine with him. After he intoxicated him he brought him back up to Olympus on a mule.
