  2. LO s • To understand the meaning of cognitive (realist) and non-cognitive (anti-realist) terms and how they differ • To use examples to consider how these positions might apply to meta-ethics

  3. Statements • Starter – In pairs, note down whether the following statements are true or false and dicuss why.

  4. 1 • London is the capital city of the UK

  5. 2 • This chair is blue

  6. 3 • Martin Luther King was a good person

  7. 4 • Martin Luther King did good things

  8. 5 • Tuscany is a beautiful place

  9. Answers • Which are true and which are false and why? • Is there a difference between any of these statements? Which ones are facts and opinions? How do we know?

Truth • There are two philosophical ways to define truth. • 1 – Correspondence theory of truth – Something is true insofar as it corresponds/relates to something that actually exists outside of your view. ‘I am a teacher’ corresponds to somethins that is actually true. • 2 – Coherence theory of truth – Something is true insofar as it is consistent with the view you hold. ‘I am a teacher’ is true in the sense that it consistently adheres to what I say

  11. Correspondence Truth • ‘The chair is blue’. • IF you think that this is correspondingly true, move to one side and to the other if you do not think it is.

  12. Cognitive vs Non-Cognitive • Group 1 – Use p200-201 to take notes on cognitivism. These notes must include key terms cognitive, realist and empirical. You should understand them. • Group 2 – Notes on non-cognitive/anti-realist. Must also include rejection of propositions
