  1. QUALTITATIVE vs. QUANTITATIVE DATA

  2. Learning Target:I can identify the difference between qualitative and quantitative data & observations vs inferences. • SUCCESS CRITERIA: I can write my own qualitative and quantitative data from an object. • ACTVITIES: Take notes, apply understanding to give examples, and apply understanding of qualitative vs. quantitative data to your own object.

  3. Initial Thoughts (5 minutes) • What is data? • List 3 or more times that you have seen data recorded. • Describe an experiment that you would record data for.

  4. In science we identify two types of data - QUALITATIVE VS. QUANTITATIVE DATAWatch the video and identify the difference.

  5. Discuss with your table partner the answer to each question. • What is qualitative data? • What other words are similar to qualitative? • What is quantitative data? • What other words are similar to quantitative? • Quali means ______________________ and Quanti means _____________________. “what kind” or “what is it like” “how much” or “how many”

  6. Identify the different types of data (qualitative = QL or quantitative = QNT).

  7. Learning Target:I can identify the difference between qualitative and quantitative data & observations vs inferences. Middle check • SUCCESS CRITERIA:I can write my own qualitative and quantitative data from an object.

  8. Discuss with your table partner the answer. FACTS • Also, remember that data is _____________, so we make ________________ not ____________. • What is the difference between an observation and an inference? OBSERVATIONS INFERENCES

  9. OBSERVATION VS. INFERENCEWatch the video and identify the difference between observation and inference.

  10. Identify the difference between observation = Obsor Inference = Inf.

  11. Try it yourself  Find an object in your backpack or on your table. Draw a T-chart for qualitative vs quantitative data and list as many pieces of data that you can find for the object for each type.

  12. Revised Thoughts (5 minutes) • What was surprising? • What did you already know, but now see in a new way? • What do you still need help with?

  13. Learning Target:I can identify the difference between qualitative and quantitative data & observations vs inferences. End check • SUCCESS CRITERIA:I can write my own qualitative and quantitative data from an object.
