  3. Ensuring day old chicks are healthy given the disease and production challenges producers face. Several vaccine products can be administered at the hatchery to help in disease prevention:

  4. MD: Most significant because this is the only time we vaccinate for this disease. All producers have a vaccine program for MD. The use of a HVT(3)+SB-1(2)+Rispens(1) is still the most protective

  5. MD Vaccines: • HVT – Serotype 3 • SB-1 – Serotype 2 • Rispens – Serotype 1 • HVT/ILT • HVT/IBD

  6. Non-Combinations: No mixing of a HVT/ILT with another HVT vectored product or straight HVT.

  7. IBD: A challenging disease for all producers. The most common/very effective product now being used for control is an HVT/IBD. Less commonly used are the live day-of-age products mixed with MD.

  8. ILT: Still a significant challenge virus. One option for control of this disease is an HVT/ILT. If using this product, the vaccine companies recommend combining with Rispens for good MD protection also.

  9. Cocci: With more speciality eggs and different housing conditions of birds being on the floor, Cocci vaccine is being asked to be applied in the hatchery.

  10. Pox: Generally this is a T.C. product given to birds being exposed to high pox challenge early in grow.

  11. E. Coli: Very limited need for this product to be applied in the hatchery. To get the most benefit from this product, apply closer to the challenge period. The most common challenge occurs early in lay or during the lay cycle.

  12. Infrared Beak Treatment (Nova-Tech): The infrared treated upper and lower beak is done with minimal stress and allows the sharp ends of the beak to drop off at 7-10 days. This leaves the birds with shortened, rounded beaks.

  13. ST: Live salmonella typhimurium vaccine applied in the hatchery for protection to salmonella challenges. Early field applications are also very effective. Multiple applications offer a boost effect. Priming with live prior to killed to increase protection. The live ST’s from LAH and Pfizer are okay to give with antibiotics in the hatchery.

  14. Before we go into more details of a salmonella program, I would like to cover some important details of how we get the eggs to the point of producing day-old chicks. The program we follow for production and distribution of day-old chicks is NPIP.

  15. NPIP: A program of monthly “testing” to produce chicks clean for Mg, Ms, P-T, SE, and AI. NPIP is a very critical program for our industry.

  16. AI: AI clean status (NPIP)(AGIP) Horizontal transmission (Birds housed indoors to prevent AI exposure.)

  17. Producer plan for HPAI: Secure Egg Supply Plan AI clean by daily testing under the (FAST Eggs program). Iowa PS farms are certified for this program so we can continue to deliver chicks in the event of a HPAI in Iowa.

  18. Mg, Ms: Clean status (NPIP): (Plate, PCR) Vertical transmission.

  19. P-T: Clean status (NPIP): Vertical transmission. Clean the past 30 years in the U.S. (Plate testing).

  20. SE: Clean status (NPIP): Vertical transmission. HYNA LLC test and deliver chicks under NPIP testing requirements for SE clean designation. We have a comprehensive live and killed salmonella vaccination program in place for our breeders to prevent vertical transmission to day-old chicks.

  21. The salmonella vaccination program provides enhanced levels of protection by engaging all three branches of the immune system – humoral, mucosal, and cell-mediated immunity. Altogether are important for clearance and defense of salmonella infections.

  22. Hy-Line Technical Services Laboratory • NPIP accredited laboratory • Lab technicians are NPIP certified • Participate in yearly proficiency tests for each NPIP program • Cooperate with reference laboratories for confirmatory testing • Utilize cutting edge technology • Collaborate with university, government, and private industry laboratories to advance poultry testing

  23. NPIP Salmonella Testing Protocol All samples are tested individually and submitted to NPIP monthly SAMPLES

  24. ENRICHMENT+PCR Salmonella Testing Protocol Day 0 Tetrathionate Broth 42°C, 20–24 hours Negative Final Result (22–28 hours) Day 1 Polymerase Chain Reaction Test (PCR)* 2–4 hours Positive *Day 1 PCR may be bypassed in favor of culture. Enrichment and overall time line stays the same.

  25. Salmonella Testing Protocol ENRICHMENT Day 2–3 MSRV plate (Modified Semi-solid Rappaport vassiliades), 42°C, 24–48 hours Read at 24 hours, if positive, continue to selective media. If negative, incubate an additional 24 hours. Negative and Positive Selective Media

  26. SELECTIVE MEDIA Salmonella Testing Protocol Negative Day 3–4 XLT4 and BGN plates, 37°C, 24 hours Final Result Positive Day 4–5 Triple Sugar Iron slants, 37°C, 24 hours Negative Final Result Positive Serotyping

Salmonella Testing Protocol SEROTYPING Day 5–9 Serotyping reagents (somatic antigens) O antigen (1st day) H antigen (2nd day) Gard plate (motility) Negative Final Result Positive Depending on antigen test results, 6 groups and 11 serotypes can be identified. Biochemical tests may be run for further clarification. Isolate may be sent to National Veterinary Services Laboratory (NVSL), Ames, Iowa for confirmation Final Result

  28. Animal Welfare: Priorities for AW at the hatchery: • Employees treat animals humanely and a welfare policy that holds employees and owners accountable for their actions • AW officers who are responsible for programs and policies

  29. Critical points of production that are optimized in line with welfare requirements • Documentation of all procedures/systems verification • Audits – internally/externally (3rd party review)

  30. Closing: When it comes down to it, there are innumerable factors for the production of eggs, hatching and delivery of day-old chicks. The responsibility of the hatchery is to produce a safe, high quality and affordable chick for the commercial egg industry.
