  12. Key Networking Technologies for Wireless MAN • Alternative Technologies for Wireless MAN • WiFi – IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n • WiMAX – IEEE 802.16-2004, 802.16-2005(802.16e) • WiFi/WiMAX Mesh • Hybrid FTTx/Cable/DSL+ WiMAX+WiFi • 3.5G(HSDPA, HSUPA) • Related Issues: - Too many to choose ? - Is the technology selection a government’s job? - When/whether to adopt a technology?

  13. QoS/Security/Trust Considerations • Alternative of Security and QoS Technologies • Data Protections (MAC layer : WPA, WEP), VPN • Authentication and Roaming: (Web-based, 802.1x EAP ) • Application-Specific Protection (VoIP, DRM) • The Network Infrastructure (AAA server, Roaming server, AP, BS, etc.) • Role of Players • Commercial Operators (Infrastructure Owner) • Virtual Network Operator/ Application Provider • Government (as a Gov. Service Provider) • End Users * Different Player/Services may demand for different levels of QoS, security, and trust

  14. Hybrid Solution for Fiber, WiMAX & WiFi • Simultaneous/hybrid use of Fiber, DSL, WiMAX and WLAN is expected to be most efficient • The use of WiFi alone required large scale deployment of WiFi Mesh or ADSL • Need the Operator to decide WiFi/WiMAX Mesh VDSL or ADSL2+ Fiber to the Curb Remote DSLAM Central Office Fiber to the Building(FTTB) WiMAX Backhaul WiFi

  15. Current Status of M-Taiwan • Establishment of Mobile Cities and Special Zone • 2 Mobile Cities • Taipei • Taichung • Public Safety Related Application services • I-Lan (Traffic/safety monitoring), Lou-Dong (Medical Service in Rural Area)、Hua-Lian (e-Medicine) • 19 Mobile Life Applications : dual-network handset applications, VoIP, etc. • Campus Roaming Project - 61+ Universities/Colleges and 300 + School Hot Spot for Mobile Learning Applications

  17. The evolution path to UNS • Starting with e-Taiwan, with strong governance to form a broad national vision. • The success of e-Taiwan Program has relied on a reliable solid broadband Infrastructure and ICT tech. • e-Government as a pilot to lead the information society. M-Taiwan: Any time any where access UNS :Ubiquitous Network Society

  18. Closing Remarks • Bridging digital divide has to be based on the local culture, needs, and brings benefit to the livelihood • Creating synergy from digital service team, volunteers, and local enthusiastic residents is critical for project to success • In order to bridge digital divide and make DOC sustainable, assist community residents to make their livings by using digital information technology Digital divide is not just an ICT problem but also a social one. It should be resolved by grassroots' devotion + government guidance.
