  1. Twitter Maggie Edwards

  2. What is Twitter? It is simply whatever the users want it to be. It’s a way to drive people to a blog or to a business site, a micro-blog with snippets of information, a news feed, a chat room for you and your closest friends, a mind stream of your thoughts and much more.

  3. Twitter’s Mission Statement “to instantly connect people everywhere to what’s most important to them.”

  4. Interesting Facts about Twitter The first tweet was sent in 2006 by co-founder Jack Dorsey, and said “just setting up my twitter.” A fake tweet temporarily wiped out $130 billion off the stock market in 2013. it claimed President Obama had been injured in a White House explosion. Friendstalker was almost the name of what we now know as Twitter In 2009, Daniel Knight became the first person prosecuted for tweeting. He wanted a ‘war’ against U.S. gov and threatened to cut cops’ heads off. #nowthatchersdead led many to think that Cher had actually died. This still occurs on Twitter with other well known people. • It took 3 years, 2 months and 1 day for the first billion tweets to be sent. • Today, over a billion tweets are sent every 48 hours. • Twitter can predict flu outbreaks, according to a study of 167,995 tweets. Tweets relating to the illness were used to identify outbreaks in 9 out of 11 cities. • Twitter is currently estimated to be worth $30 billion. • It has never made a profit and in 2013 it reported a loss of $645 million. • Only 11% of internet users in the U.S. actively use twitter

  5. Twitter’s Vision A strong vision Twitter claims is to make it a micro-sharing platform Micro-sharing? A way to reduce the emotional and intellectual distance between people and help them become more engaged, involved, connected, effective and collaborative. Very successful in public communications whether it is traditional or non-traditional media.

  6. Traditional Media Television, radio and newspaper… How has Traditional Media been affected by Twitter? #Oscars2014 #TheBachelor #TheVoice #RumpRoast #Glee

  7. Non-Traditional Media/New Media Exactly the opposite of television, radio and newspaper This refers to on-demand access to content anytime, anywhere, on any digital device. Social Medias, websites…

  8. SWOT Analysis Strengths: Has no other site completely like it at themoment Simple but powerful Gets tons of publicity It is the ultimate link discovering sharing tool Opportunities: It is becoming the biggest social media marketing tool Weaknesses: Uneven distribution of Tweets. 90% of tweets are coming from 10% of users. Twitters sales have fallen since the company began reporting revenue in 2011. Threats: Spam Facebook and other social medias on the rise http://www.mediabistro.com/alltwitter/twitter-ipo-timeline_b51469

  9. Expected Outcomes? http://youtu.be/TXD-Uqx6_Wk http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=TXD-Uqx6_Wk Clearly social media isn’t going anywhere, anytime soon. Twitter has a very bright future, because their strengths outweigh their weaknesses.

  10. Discussion Questions Do you think Twitter has any major competitors? Or should be worried about their future? Do you think that Twitter will grow within the next 5 years or slow down? Why? Do you think Twitter should really be worth it’s current market capitalization of $36 billion (roughly the same as Kraft foods)? Has social media, in general, been an advantage for people, celebrities, companies and others, or more of a disadvantage?
