  1. Reporting to Parents: Writing good commentsSemester 1, 2016

  2. Focus • From assessment to reporting: • ensuring that reporting grades are based on quality assessment; and • Writing good report comments: • ensuring the provision of quality information to parents in language they understand.

  3. From assessment to reporting

  4. Meeting the needs of our parents • Only one of the reasons we assess is to report progress and achievement to parents; • However we need to provide this information to them in language that they understand. Before sending information out to parents: • Check for grammar; • Check for meaning; and • Check for intent. Ensure that it: • Is in plain English (parent friendly); • Is suitable for the lay person (does not rely on educational language); • Uses consistent wording.

  5. Writing good report comments

  6. Report comments should be: • Free of jargon and complex technical language; • Reliable and valid within and across schools; • Easily understood by parents/caregivers and the student; • Focused on: • How the student has progressed; and • What the student has achieved in the reporting period. Both need to relate to clearly demonstrated outcomes or standards.

  7. Introducing the Triple A method for writing report comments…

  8. Report comment summary A comment needs to report: • A student’s ACHIEVEMENT; • Their current APPROACH to classroom work; and • And provide ACTION for further progress. ACHIEVEMENT: A summary of the student’s progress over the reporting period. APPROACH: How is the student going about their work? What are they doing well? What impacts on their learning? ACTION: How can the student make further progress? What particular issues need to be addressed?

  9. Comment example Achievement Approach Action • Tom has made steady progress in all areas of English. • He is beginning to look for meaning not directly indicated by the written word when reading and has shown improvement in his development of characters within his narrative writing. • Tom still has some difficulties when speaking in a large group situation and needs time to clarify his thoughts first. He needs to work hard to continue his progress in these areas.

  10. Areas of achievement:the extent to which the student has progressed since the last reporting period:

  11. Approaches to learning:provides information about the behavioural factors that may enhance or impinge upon learning:

  12. Action:provides information about the particular issues that need to be addressed and progress learning.

  13.  APPROACH Verbs to describe his progress and achievement through approaches to learning APPROACH Skills, knowledge and understandings are described for the outcome. ACHIEVEMENT Overall comment about the achievement: could be related to standard or expectation. • Fred achieved the expected standard in English (). When speaking he shows awareness of audience and can explain, describe and recount ()events logically. When reading he identifies the main ideas in fictional and informational texts. Fred plans writing tasks and has successfully attempted a range of forms ().He could improve his writing by taking more time to edit his work (). ACTION Areas for improvement
