Empire of King Phillip II • Son Phillip Hapsburg inherits Spain, Netherlands & Italian states • Phillip wants to expand his empire and has the money to wage war • 1555: Hapsburg Emperor Charles V begins to divide his land holdings • Brother Ferdinand Hapsburg inherits Austria & Holy Roman Empire 1. 1580: Takes Portugal when the King of Portugal dies w/o an heir 2. Goes to war with the powerful Ottoman Empire (Muslims) 3. 1588: Attacks England to punish Queen Elizabeth

  3. Anglo-Spanish War of 1588 • Spain’s navy was defeated setback for Spain but they still have money • Turn to page 156 & answer map questions 1 & 2 in your notes • England had better strategies & more efficient guns (10 rounds to 1)

Spain’s Empire Weakens • Spain also heavily borrowing to pay for wars • Spain having a “golden age”, but a growing population & less valuable silver is hurting Spanish economy • Spain expels the Jews & Moors, losing many taxpaying artisans • Dutch Protestants start a revolution against Spain in the Netherlands • War lasts 11 years, Spain loses & goes into more debt • Northern provinces become independent, South remains Spanish
