With schools, Conservatives believe in school choice and it is a major hot button issue on the conservative platform. United States public schools in many areas have failed children on so many levels and for so many years. In terms of the politics of schooling it is argued that there often is a bad match between conservative ideologies and those held by conservative educational theorists. While most scholars agree with this assessment, the extent to Conservative News which this occurs may vary depending upon the perspective taken. In this article we examine several conservative ideologies and examine how they fit within the broader framework of schooling. One prominent ideology concerning education is the Christian right. This ideology has been around for a long time and came into light during the rise of the Religious Right during the 1980s. According to this ideology education should promote the teaching of conservative values, particularly Christian values. Many people who subscribe to this ideology also adhere to a moral code regarding what they consider to be right and wrong, and to the ways in which they personally view things. A second related ideology about education that has gained some popularity in recent years is laissez faire. The basic premise of this ideology is that the state should not get involved in educating individuals or children. Individuals should be free to choose their path in life and the state should not interfere. Although, according to some versions of this ideology, public schooling should exist as it provides a necessary structure for an individual's social development and further maturation. One conservative belief about schools which is growing in popularity is the charter school movement. According to this ideology public schooling is not effective for many students and in many cases actually makes the problems worse. By providing a home-based learning environment students are able to excel academically and become more successful in life. Homeschooling and charter schools which have had a great success rate are encouraged as alternative to public schools. Concerns about the socialization process have also been raised about the success rate of students who have undergone a public schooling setting. A study conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics found that students who had participated in a traditional classroom setting were more socially adjusted than those who participated in a home-schooling setting. Also, the more liberal educational philosophies that prevail in most Western countries have led to a decline in the socialization skills of many children. Studies have shown that most children today, regardless of their social background, are excessively involved in computer games, as compared to the earlier generation who participated in reading and arts activities. To counter this, many homeschool curriculums involve socializing with other homeschooled children. Sports and other social activities are highly encouraged for homeschooled children.
