  1. Advertising Techniques “They trick us into buying their products!”

  2. Repetition • You hear this product mentioned several times in the ad to make you remember the product when you go shopping. • Example: Store advertising face painting

  3. Emotional Advertising • You will be happier, smarter or better looking if you have this item. • Example: Advertising for toothpaste. “If you use this toothpaste, you will have whiter, brighter teeth.”

  4. Celebrity Endorsement • You admire this person and want to have whatever he or she is selling. • Example: “Tiger Woods wears Nike shoes – so should you.”

  5. Bandwagon Approach • You should eat here or have this product because everyone does. • Example: “McDonald’s hamburgers – over a billion served! Since everyone is eating at McDonald’s you should too.”

  6. Transfer • You connect with a name or picture when you see the advertisement. • Example: When you see an ad for Target, you also see the dog associated with the store.

  7. Activity! . Students and parents, as a team, will search through magazines and newspapers on the tables and find examples of advertising techniques. When example is found, cut it out and write students’ name on it. Use the tape and post the advertisement on the appropriate chart on the wall. The team with the most examples will win door prize. You will have 20 minutes to complete this activity. Are there any questions before we begin?
