  1. Together Everyone Achieves More Gladstone Primary School

  2. Healthy Eating Here in Gladstone we try hard to eat really healthily. Here are some of the things we do: We encourage children to eat fruit by selling it to eat at playtime. We drink milk after/before play time and have water fountains in every class so children can stay hydrated.

  3. We like eating in the canteen at lunch time because Liz the cook always provides healthy, nutritious food. For those who have packed lunch we send leaflets home to remind them to pack healthy food.

  4. Keeping Fit In school we have one hour of games and one hour of gym or dance every week. Year six have been having rugby training by the Cardiff Blues in our games lessons.

  5. After school there are lots of clubs to keep the children fit and healthy: Rugby Football Cricket Multi sports Golf Keep fit Healthy Cooking Gardening Forest schools

  6. In Year Four children go swimming every day for three weeks at Barry Leisure Centre. This is called Learn to Swim. In Year Six we go to Stackpole for a week. Some of the things we do are: Rock climbing, abseiling, canoeing, mountain biking and much more.

  7. At Gladstone we have JRSO (Junior Road Safety Officers). They meet once a month and discuss how to raise awareness of road safety. At home time the JRSO’s go onto the front yard and talk to infants about how they can keep safe while crossing the roads. Keeping safe

  8. Every year, Tufty talks to the infants about road safety. In Year 2, the children take part in Kerb craft, where the children learn how to cross the roads safely. In Year 6 the children have their Cycling Proficiency test. We learn how to cycle safely on the roads.

  9. We are lucky to have lots of visitors in our school who teach us about keeping safe at home , on the internet , and from strangers . The visitors are from South Wales Police and Barry Fire Service. • Our Play Ground Pals help to keep children safe and happy at play times.

  10. Keeping Clean Our toilets are bright and clean and we use warm water and soap to wash our hands. There are also hand sanitizers all around the school, which we use as often as we can. In assembly we have discussed when we need to wash our hands and why it is so important.

  11. The School Council have put up posters by all sinks to remind the children how to wash their hands correctly. We’ve enjoyed using the hand washing light box in our class rooms. This shows us where the germs are on our hands so we can wash them better.

  12. At Gladstone we have easy to remember rules. We need rules to make our day run smoothly and happily and for every one to get along together. We also have clear sanctions for when rules are broken. We have lots of rewards for good behaviour and work at Gladstone. Teachers give us lots of praise, we often evaluate our own work and our friends’ work. Praise Points, stickers and raffle tickets are given by the teachers. Well Being

  13. We have Proud to Present assembly every fortnight. Children have badges and certificates for good work, effort and behaviour . We have friendship assembly every fortnight. Each time, a child from each class is chosen for being a good friend to others. We can show our trophies, certificates and medals from home during this assembly. Our parents can send in a nomination too. Proud to Present

  14. Gladstone School Council meet once a fortnight during assembly time. The School Council get together and do their best to make school more enjoyable. We are working on a new project to get living willow structures on the field. We are involved in lots of decisions about school life. School Council

  15. Playground Pals In Gladstone we have Playground Pals to help us keep safe and happy while in the playground and on the stairs. We have special yellow hats that we wear so children can see who and where we are. The Playground Pals are a selection of Year Six who are willing to give up their play times to look after others .You can see our smiling faces on our display board.

  16. Learning in Class In class we learn how important it is to respect other pupils’ opinions and to listen to their ideas. In Year 6 all children, (if their parents agree) learn about how our bodies change during puberty. Year 4 and 5 children have taken part in a well being survey called the N-bar project. This is a set of questionnaires to ask how children feel about themselves , school and friendships.

  17. Every year at Gladstone we support a variety of organisations – such as Tai Hafan, Operation Christmas Child, Marie Curie, Macmillan and the Gibbonsdown Salvation Army. Local Community

  18. We are the proud owner of our 3rd Eco flag We have an Eco Committee that meets monthly to discuss how to promote our motto “Go Green at Gladstone” Environment

  19. We recycle plastic, paper and cardboard. We also reuse paper where we can. We are encouraged to turn off the lights and projectors when we leave the classroom We have composting bins which we use on our gardens. We held an Eco week where we made clothes out of recyclable materials and held a fashion show. We made a greenhouse out of plastic bottles and designed and made a mural out of plastic bottle lids.

  20. We are very lucky in Gladstone because we have a huge field to play on and a smaller field with a willow fence and a fruit orchard. We also have a woodland area with birdhouses and a pond.

  21. We also have large playgrounds with trim trails and bright playground markings. The Foundation Phase area and Junior playground have sand pits for play.
