  2. 'WHAT DRAMATIC EFFECTS DOES PRIESTLY USE?' • Dramatic effects are things, which happen on stage & which grab our/the audience's attention. So, things you might be looking at could include: lighting/music/staging/costumes etc. • You can, however, also answer this from the point of view of the text in front of you only - maybe, after all, you've only read it in class & haven't got to see it. If this is the case, then you might look at:

  3. DRAMATIC EFFECTS • The characters & their relationships with each other eg. Sheila with the Inspector; Sheila with Gerald; Eric with his father....lots of possibilities here - just choose the one(s) which have had the most dramatic effect upon you - again, it will tend to be the one you remember best. • Mystery/unanswered questions - a big part of this play focuses on the background of the Inspector - where does he come from? Who is he? What does he want? Where does he go at the end? Where does he get his information from? Etc. This is intriguing, and, as such, it keeps us interested - it is very much one of the play's dramatic effects.

  4. DRAMATIC EFFECTS • The language used....for example where the Inspector doesn't follow the drift of the conversation eg. I don't play golf - &- I don't want any rope... I find this odd. He seems to be from another planet here, & his language is dramatic because it's got my attention. Also, the bits where Mr. Birling gets something wrong - especially in his first conversation with Eric & Gerald, where he talks about the Titanic being unsinkable etc.

  5. DRAMATIC EFFECTS • The action - there can be little as dramatic, however reported it may be, of a girl committing suicide by burning her insides out by drinking a bottle of disinfectant. The Inspector himself makes sure we remember this dramatic action by constantly repeating it. We are forced to remember it. Also, the behaviour of Eric -getting Eva/Daisy pregnant & then abandoning here...that action is dramatic. As is her visit to the Charity run by Mrs. Birling - the irony that Mrs. Birling kills her own grandchild obviously adds to the drama here.
