  2. I. Changes in England • Slavery • Movement to abolish slavery happened in late 1700s • In 1807 Parliament passed law making slave trade illegal • British Navy enforced in the colonies • Kept going in Caribbean islands until 1811

  3. I. Changes in England • GB had been a constitutional monarchy since William and Mary • King or queen with Parliament running the show • Only men with property could vote (6%)

  4. I. Changes in England • Reform Bill of 1832 • Middle class protested not voting • Parliament passed the Bill for middle class to vote • Gave seats in Parliament to new industrial cities • No representation before • All men could vote in England by 1884

Changes for women? • Women couldn’t vote in any industrial nation in 1900 • In 1800s women in US and GB peacefully campaigned for the vote • In 1903 the Women’s Social and Political Union held rallies and parades • Leaders were arrested, used hunger strikes • After WWI before US &GB could vote

  6. III. Russia • Russia did not industrialize in early 1800s b/c of serfdom • Peasants were bound to nobles whose lands they worked • Czars didn’t want to free serfs b/c nobles would be angry

  7. III. Russia • After losing a war with Ottomans in 1850 new czar, Alexander II, starts reforms • In 1861 he freed the serfs • Nobles kept half their land • Serfs had to buy the land and had no money • Alex II was assassinated in 1881 • Alexander III brought back tighter control

European Revolutions • Four things happening in Europe in early 1800s • Conservatives – supported kings • Mostly nobles & land owners • Liberals – more power to elected legislatures voted on by property owners • Mostly middle class merchants • Radicals – no more kings and everyone votes • Nationalism – love and loyalty to one’s nation

  9. IV. European Revolutions • Greece had been Ottoman for centuries • Greeks revolt in 1821 • Other Europeans help and Greece wins in 1827 • Independent in 1830

  10. V. 1830 • Belgians declare independence from the Dutch • Italy tries to unify • Poles revolt against Russia • French king flees and a new king is crowned

  11. VI. 1848 • In France, king is overthrown and they start a republic • Leaders begin to argue • Political changes only? • Or social and economic changes too? • Stuck w/political only after street fighting • Legislature and strong president • Louis-Napoleon is picked (Napoleon’s nephew)

  12. VI. 1848 • Louis-Napoleon later named himself emperor • Built railroads and revived the economy • Hungarians and Czechs revolt • Are put down forcefully
