  1. Complete College Academy TeamUpdate Fall 2012 In-Service

  2. Goal 1: Provide a comprehensive advising system that ensures all students receive timely and accurate guidance to achieve educational goals. • Require that faculty advisors approve course changes, withdrawals, selections, and schedules. • Design a multi-tiered advising system to include: general information; academic advising; student needs (such as financial aid, personal difficulties, etc.); group advising sessions multiple times throughout each semester for all programs (transfer pathways and career programs). Group advising makes advising more manageable for faculty. • Provide “best practice” training and a check-list for academic advisors (all advisors at all levels or types of advising) and staff acting as mentors.

  3. Goal 2: Implement dynamic orientation programs to ensure all new students achieve a quality start to college. • Great Expectations was conducted throughout the summer for all new students entering JSCC for the fall term. All students received one-on-one advising and useful information concerning course enrollment options, Financial Aid, and general information about the “College Experience.” • Students filled out evaluations at each session. These evaluations will be analyzed for potential changes that would increase effectiveness of the sessions in the future.

  4. Goal 3: Implement communication strategies that enhance awareness, understanding, and promote student engagement. • Develop an effective external marketing plan intentionally linked to recruitment and admissions efforts. Implement more effective means of using social network media to brand the College and to address student needs and share information about JSCC activities and services. • Develop a “go-to” list that identifies person(s) and/or departments responsible for the most common student needs. • Customer-service training to include cross-training essential for all employees.

  5. Goal 4: Develop an intentional and strategic recruitment system to grow student enrollment and promote completion. • An Enrollment Plan that includes annual recruitment and retention goals has been developed. • While remaining “open door” implement strategies to maximize enrollment of students committed to degree completion. (Likely completers would be identified by GPA, ACT scores, etc.) • Create a series of recruitment outreach events that seek to make greater contact with prospective students throughout the 14-county service area. (Some were done in spring, more will be held throughout the year.) • Establish a strong institutional structure and approach to ensure JSCC is the most preferred Dual Enrollment option in the region. • Increase recruitment of Home Schooled students.

  6. Goal 5: Create a sustainable campus culture of student retention and completion. • A campus-wide retention/intervention team is being developed to provide faculty/staff with assistance concerning student contact/follow-up such as absences from classes, etc. (early alert, counseling, early intervention for at-risk students). • Implement a professional development series on student engagement and retention. • Establish grant writing “go-to” staff/faculty members to focus on funding opportunities for retention/completion initiatives.

  7. Goal 6: Provide academic structures and programs that promote student retention and completion. • Develop a new Nursing and Allied Health classroom building. • Institute a revised academic organizational plan to improve effectiveness. (In progress) • Implement new accelerated degree programs and examine alternate terms and schedules that reduce time to completion (i.e. trimesters, year-round, winter term, May terms, etc.). • Implement policies and procedures that provide ongoing student feedback. For example: Reinstitute mid-term grades and/or progress reports. • Develop a robust Honors Program to recruit and retain quality students. • Develop a Summer Academy for remedial students. (In progress) • Increase the number of certificates awarded. Every program should have a certification check point.

  8. Goal 7: Revitalize student life to promote involvement, engagement, and campus spirit. • Provide facilities that promote a positive/attractive image and student engagement. i.e. New Student Center. • Implement the One-Stop Model to provide excellent customer service. (in progress) • Implement a Student Activities program that effectively involves students in the life of the college. Develop more recurring programs and activities. Develop new campus traditions and events to strengthen sense of community. • Increase student service learning projects across disciplines.

  9. Jackson State Community College Progress towards 5-year strategic plan completion goals

  10. 2009 VS 2012 Completions

  11. 2009-2012 Completion Totals

  12. Why do we need new targets? Goals were set before the introduction of Academic Certificates. All TBR Colleges have added Academic Certificates. We are competing with all other TBR Community Colleges for state $$$. Those with the highest completion rates, receive the most $$$. Funding is now based on completions instead of enrollment.

  13. New Completion Targets

  14. New Completion Target Totals Based on the previous pattern of an expected 6% increase per year, the new target totals for all degrees and certificates are: 2012-2013: 703 2013-2014: 742 2014-2015: 781
