Basketball Drills for Kids Teach kids the fundamentals to take their game to the next level. These are fun and engaging drills that will help develop their skills.
Warm-up Drills 1 2 3 Jumping Jack Flash Stretch it Out Follow the Leader Jumping jacks with a twist - players pass a basketball to each other as they jump and land. Grab a partner and do some dynamic stretches, like leg swings, to loosen up before practice. Take turns leading the team through different moves like high knees and butt kicks to get the blood flowing.
Dribbling Drills Cone Dribble Relay Race Obstacle Course Weave around cones while dribbling the ball. You can make it competitive by racing against teammates. Split the team into two or more groups and race while dribbling around cones. The team that finishes first wins. Set up an obstacle course with cones, chairs, and other objects and have players dribble through it as fast as they can.
Passing Drills Monkey in the Middle Target Practice One Hand Only A classic game where players pass the ball to each other while one player tries to intercept it in the middle. Use targets like hula hoops or a net to practice accurate passing in a fun way. Challenge players to pass and catch with only one hand to develop coordination and dexterity. Hot Potato Set a time and players pass the ball around trying to get rid of it before time runs out.
Shooting Drills 1 Layup Line Start with basic layups and progress to more advanced moves like reverse layups and spinning. 2 King of the Court Set up games of 1-on-1 or 2-on-2 where players race to make a certain number of baskets to become the king of the court. 3 Free Throw Frenzy Practice free throws by setting up a competition and having players take turns to see who can make the most baskets in a row.
Defensive Drills Cone Defense Partner Up Chair Defense Use cones to simulate players and have defenders work on their footwork and positioning. Have players practice defending each other by working on closeouts and one-on-one moves. Put chairs on the court to teach players how to guard different positions and spaces on the court.
Team Drills 3 vs 2 Scrimmage Conditioning Drills Give the team less players to work on their offensive and defensive skills against more opponents. Split players into equal teams to practice applying the drills in a game-like setting. Combine stamina-building drills like suicides, ladder drills, or sprints with basketball handling to improve physical and mental stamina.
Cool-down and Stretching 1 2 3 Calf and Heel Stretch Quad Stretch Triceps Stretch Find a wall or fencing and lean against it, with one leg in front of the other. Bend the front knee and keep the back leg straight. Push the back heel towards the ground and feel the stretch behind your leg. With one hand against the wall or fencing, hold onto the top of your foot behind your back with the opposite hand. Pull your foot towards your buttocks to stretch the front of your thigh. Reach one arm overhead, placing the hand just behind your shoulder. Use your other hand to gently push your elbow back until you feel a stretch in your tricep.
