Rise above the rest . . . and create a climate of success! Greg A. Shelley, Ph.D. Rise Above Performance Consulting NYSAAA Breakout Session March 14, 2014
Topics for today • Climate Control • 20 SUCCESS Climate Reminders • 15 TEAM Climate Questions
Climate Control (Shelley, 2013) Destroyers Changers Where are your staff members? Retainers
Climate Control • Define the “team climate” you want? What kind of environment do you want in your athletic department? • As the AD, what are you doing to create climate changers? How do you handle climate destroyers? And what do you do with your climate retainers?
20 Success Climate Reminders(Shelley, 2013) • Attitude is everything and optimism is contagious • Passion + Action = Momentum (it’s not by chance) • You move in the direction of what you think • What got you here . . . won’t get you there • Think 2LU (Sanborn, 2008) . . . but stay in the present
20 Success Climate Reminders(Shelley, 2013) • Find your department “tipping point” (Gladwell, 2002) • Find staff “boiling points” (212 degrees to change) • Do the little things (people “buy-in” to you and why) • Respect is best communicated with a “thank you” • Communication is mostly what we see
20 Success Climate Reminders(Shelley, 2013) • Remember to power of nice • Create “distinction” (good is not good enough) • Clearly state expectations (and time-frames) • Follow-thru and allow for consequences • Your response to being down is your most important response
20 Success Climate Reminders(Shelley, 2013) • Your best friends should bring out your best • Be a provider (bring in, build up, and branch out) • Know the difference between a bump and a catastrophe . . . and a tweak and a makeover • Leaders lead (by example and vocally) • It’s not about you!
15 TEAM CLIMATE Questions(Shelley, 2013) • Do I get excited about going to work? • Do I get excited about working for my Athletic Director? • Do I feel like I receive the “coaching” to get better every day? • Does my AD consistently “tell me what to do” (and how to improve)? • Does my AD set a positive tone?
15 TEAM CLIMATE Questions(Shelley, 2013) • Is my AD encouraging and supportive? • Is there a clearly communicated standard for me to strive for each day? • Is there a well communicated “expectation” for me in everything I do? • Is my AD excited (passionate) about his/her job? • Is my AD organized?
15 TEAM CLIMATE Questions(Shelley, 2013) • Is my AD demanding but fair? • Does my AD work to know and understand me and my program? • Can I trust my AD? • Is my job demanding (hard) but also rewarding? • Is our department culture about winning and being the BEST we can be?
Take home points? How is your department climate? What do you need to START STOP CONTINUE
