Learning objectives • To Define and Distinguish between a pure and impure substance • Identify the types of mixtures, distinguish and define them • Define a solution and state few of its examples and properties
Types of matter • If we look around in our surroundings we can see many things of different states. Substances can broadly be classified into :- • Pure substances • Impure substances
Pure substances • Pure substances are the substances that consist of a single type of particles or a single type of matter • Most of the substances that we see around us not pure substances but elements such as hydrogen are pure substances • Oxygen are the examples of pure substances.
Impure substances • Impure substances are substances that consist of more than one type of matter. These substances are also called as mixtures. Mixtures are substances that are constituted of more than one kind of pure form of matter • Example- Soil is a mixture of many substances like rocks, water, minerals etc. Hence we can say that soil is a mixture as it contains more than one kind of pure form of matter
mixtures • Mixtures are substances that are constituted of more than one kind of pure form of matter • Based on their composition mixtures can be classified into:- • Homogeneous Mixtures • Heterogeneous Mixtures
Homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures • Homogeneous Mixtures- Mixtures in which the composition of the particles in the mixture is uniform throughout • Heterogeneous Mixtures- Mixtures in which the composition of the particles in the mixture is non-uniform throughout
What is a solution? • Solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances. A solution can be of either Solid, Liquid or Gas • Example- Alloys like Brass( 30%Zinc and 70% cooper) is an example of a solid solution • Lemonade and water is an example of liquid solution • Air is an example of gaseous solution.
More examples of solutions • A solution of sugar in water is a solid in liquid solution. In this solution, sugar is the solute and water is the solvent. • A solution of iodine in alcohol known as ‘tincture of iodine’, has iodine (solid) as the solute and alcohol (liquid) as the solvent. • Aerated drinks like soda water etc., are gas in liquid solutions. These contain carbon dioxide (gas) as solute and water (liquid) as solvent. • Air is a mixture of gas in gas. Air is a homogeneous mixture of a number of gases. Its two main constituents are: oxygen (21%) and nitrogen (78%). The other gases are present in very small quantities.
PROPERTIES OF SOLUTIONS • A solution is a Homogeneous mixture • The particles of a solution are smaller than 1 nm (10-9 metre) in diameter. So, they cannot be seen by naked eyes. • Because of very small particle size, they do not scatter a beam of light passing through the solution. So, the path of light is not visible in a solution • The solute particles cannot be separated from the mixture by the process of filtration. The solute particles do not settle down when left undisturbed, that is, a solution is stable
