Thailand Is On Track To Be World's Second-Largest Rice Exporter With 8 Million Tonnes Thailand intends to export more than 8 million tonnes of rice this year, making it the second-largest rice exporter in the world. Thailand’s Rice Exports Anucha Burapachaisri, the acting government spokesperson and deputy secretary-general to the prime minister, reported that Thai rice export increased by 14.4% year over year to 2.62 million tonnes in the first four months of 2023. He claimed that in order to boost rice exports, the public and private sectors are closely collaborating to create new rice varieties to broaden the diversity of Thai rice. He also mentioned in a statement, “A total of 21 rice varieties have been developed within the first three years of the implementation, exceeding the original goal, which is to obtain 12 new varieties within five years.” Steps Taken To Boost Rice Exports Additionally, according to Anucha, the government has taken proactive steps by stepping up its promotion of trade shows and exhibitions and entering into discussions with trading partners to explore new markets. To further advance relations and cooperation, trade representatives also met with counterparts in Hong Kong, China, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Japan, and South Africa, according to him. He also said, “A promotional campaign has been launched to create awareness on the positive image and the uniqueness of Thai rice under the concept, “Think Rice Think Thailand”. Anucha stated that Prayuth is confident that Thai rice exports will exceed the target of 8 million tonnes in 2023 with the cooperation and integration of all concerned sectors.
