The Overall Structure • Three parts: the primary circuit, a magnetic material, and the secondary circuit. • Primary circuit induces current, which travels to the secondary. • The two circuits are connected to the magnetic material by being coiled. • The alternating current created by a transformer can damage your house’s electrical system. • Resistor is usually inserted in the circuits to prevent the damage.
Primary Circuit • Needs an alternating current to work. • Wall circuit should be enough to create the alternating current. • Old lamp cord can be use to access the current. • To create the alternating current, • Separate the two wires of the lamp cord. • Wrap one of the free ends to the magnetizable material. • Use a screwdriver or bolt as an electromagnet. • Complete the loop by attaching one end of the wire to the screwdriver or bolt. • Coat the old lamp cord along the circuit. • Cover bare wire with electrical tape to avoid the risk of a shock.
Secondary Circuit • Use another wire to create a secondary circuit. • Coat the wire to avoid the risk of electrical shock. • Wrap the secondary wire around the screwdriver . • Fasten the exposed ends of the wire to the two terminals of a light bulb. • Use an electrical tape to coat crossing bare wires • Check for overlapping bare wiring • Insert plug of the primary circuit into a wall socket. • Remove the plug immediately in case you smell something burning.
Changing the Bulb Brightness • Change the voltage ratio between circuits by changing the number of windings per coil. • If secondary circuit has more windings than the primary circuit • More voltage and less current will be transmitted to the secondary circuit. • Brighten a bulb connected to the transformer by lowering the voltage and increasing the current.
