  1. Difference Between OPRA Australia and New Zealand For pharmacists looking to work in Australia or New Zealand, passing the Overseas Pharmacist Readiness Assessment (OPRA) is the first step. While both countries have similar pathways and processes, key differences exist in eligibility criteria, number of attempts, and post-exam requirements. Understanding these differences can help pharmacists determine which path aligns with their professional goals and qualifications. Here's a comparison of OPRA in Australia and New Zealand, highlighting the different requirements and processes involved. 1. Eligibility Criteria While both countries require a Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm) or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree and active registration as a pharmacist in the candidate’s home country, New Zealand adds an extra requirement: at least one year of professional experience in a retail or hospital pharmacy. In contrast, Australia does not require this additional work experience, making the entry process slightly more streamlined for pharmacists without professional experience. 2. Number of Attempts One big difference between the OPRA process in New Zealand and Australia is the number of exam attempts allowed. In New Zealand, candidates are limited to only two attempts to pass the OPRA exam. This means pharmacists need to be well-prepared and focused, as failing twice may take away their ability to practise in the country. On the other hand, Australia offers more flexibility, allowing multiple attempts for candidates to pass the OPRA exam. This gives pharmacists more opportunities to succeed, even if they don’t pass on the first try. 3. Post-Exam Requirements After successfully passing the OPRA exam, the paths diverge significantly. In Australia, pharmacists can begin practising after undergoing an internship, provided they meet the registration requirements of the Pharmacy Board of Australia. In contrast, New Zealand requires pharmacists to complete additional steps before full registration. Pharmacists must undertake the New Zealand Pharmacy Legislation (NZPL) course, a three-month program covering legal and ethical aspects of the profession. Moreover, they must complete a one-year internship under the EVOLVE programme, gaining hands-on experience and undergoing continuous assessment before they can register as fully licensed pharmacists in New Zealand. 2. In conclusion, while both Australia and New Zealand offer pathways for overseas pharmacists to gain licensure, the New Zealand process involves one year experience, only two attempts and extra post-exam training, ensuring that pharmacists are fully prepared for professional practice.
