In a recent policy shift, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has announced that over 1 lakh ineligible slum dwellers in the Dharavi slum area will now be eligible for housing under the Adani Dharavi Redevelopment plan. This benefit will also extend to the 60,000 slum dwellers who were eligible for free housing options before 2007. This decision signifies a diversion from the approach of the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government which limited housing benefits to only the eligible slum dwellers. With this development made in the policy, even the ineligible residents of Dharavi will be able to avail free housing options. This will bring about a complete transformation in their lives. Their living conditions will change for the better.
WHY LAUNCH A NEW HOUSING POLICY? Shinde explained that under the previous criteria, the Adani Dharaviredevelopment project faced multiple near-impossible hurdles. The efforts to communicate the reality to the residents of the Dharavi slum area were inadequate. So, he directed the professionals to launch an outreach campaign so that the new policy and the various benefits associated with the same could be easily communicated to the people. That way, they will no longer have to stay in any kind of doubt. All their queries will also be addressed. The various controversies which are centred around the project will also subside.
The new housing policy will feature a range of innovative schemes. These are aimed at addressing the housing needs of the people. This would include the establishment of hostels for women employed in the housing sector. It would offer them safe and convenient accommodation. The policy plan also involves the introduction of student hostels and worker accommodations. This is being done to support affordability and mobility for the people. With this new policy, the dream of every individual to own a home will be fulfilled.
WHY BRING ABOUT TRANSFORMATION TO THE DHARAVI SLUM AREA? The Adani Dharavi project aims to integrate Dharavi’s residence into a broader city fabric. This will help reduce social economic differentiation. It will also ensure that the living conditions of the people change for the better. The project operations are currently being carried out with full force. The Adani Group is also trying to make use of various advanced techniques to ensure that the various operations can take place smoothly. This will allow the global conglomerate to complete the operations of the project within the proposed deadline.
